Well, here we go again. We had another blackout in New York last week, and now it is happening in St. Louis, Missouri. The same crap from the same power company. This time it is a result of thunderstorms. Grid electricity is pathetic. If we want civilization to advance, we need to stop using primitive methods of transferring energy:http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060724/ap_on_re_us/st_louis_storms
I just heard about it. One of my customers canceled her order because of the blackout, althought it is a pretty lame excuse, she bought a pair of earrings.
i think electrical companies should step up their game and redo the whole system in a smarter way so that they dont have to work 5 times harder getting everything back up again every year.
get off the grid that's a shame though really b/c you know somewhere along the line the elderly for example are going to get pinched and deaths will follow.
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on the electrical companies to do anything. It is actually to their advantage to have people dependent on them. Depsite the fact that the United States is a country that is supposed to value independence, most people are dependent on power companies and corporations. For example, I live in the state of Nevada, and we have miles and miles of nothing but deserts and mountains. We get large amounts of sunlight throughout the year. The government of Nevada could easily build a solar energy power plant between Reno and Las Vegas, and they could generate enough power for both these cities and the rest of the state. But do you really think they're ever going to do it? It isn't likely. My advice to you is to take the necessary steps to protect you and your family. Start researching methods to obtain alternative energy. If your income comes primarily from your internet business, this means that you should be able to relocate without much of a problem. Here is a website that offers free information on living off grid, locations, and survival:http://millennium-ark.net/News_Files/Hollys.html Everyday I becoming more and more interested in the topic of survivalism.
I've had my generator running non-stop since Wednesday evening. It's small, only 2k, because I actually purchased it to use at the shows I attend with my truck and wanted something small, easily portable and quiet. But it runs the refrigerator, several lights and a fan. So I'm a lot better off than most. At least I don't have any spoiled food in the fridge. I read recently that they've finally figured out a method of achieving much greater efficiency with solar cells and I've been watching for them to come on the market so I can set up several panels on the roof, set up a bank of batteries and get off the grid.
what still amazes me is that we cannot harness lightning. Isn't one bolt of lightning supposed to be able to light up an entire city? It can't be that hard to make it useful.
