Mass email Marketing

I am considering purchasing an email list of 5 million opt in clients. I realize that number is astounding but even if 5% of them are valid it still represents 250,000 potential leads. The list comes with software that helps automate the process.

My question is... Even though the list is made up of opt in emails, are there any possible ramifications that would be associated with sending out this quantity of emails? The person I am buying from suggests I set up a separate isp for the mailer program. Which begs the question, why would I need to do this if there weren't any consequences? Anyone have any experience with this?

Well remember that these emails will surely be from spamsystems. Collecting 5 million emails without that is almost impossible. Why you need that system is not because you aren't allowed (if the seller says they're really legal..) but because otherwise most sent emails will be in the junk box of the site instead of the inbox itselves ;)

Exactly. Have you ever opted into an email list with your primary email address? I sure haven't, and I don't know many who have. I have a strong suspicion that those 5 million email addresses point to junk email boxes.

    Waste of money, IMHO.

If you send to a purchased list of email addresses, then you are spamming. Wherever the addresses came from, they did not opt in to receive email from you. Most of them are probably bad addresses anyway.

When I was an newbie, I bought a huge mailing list but smaller than the one you're referring to, I didn't get any response plus a whole lot of complaints. Whatever you do, it's vital to test it out first and don't send them straight to your main site. Take them to a blog or something. :)

I wouldn't recommend it. You'll be buying 5 million names on a cold list. Those people are likely to dismiss you as spam and you will have wasted your money. It's better to build up a good relationship with your own list.

Save your money and take the time to build a Targeted List. A Small Targeted list will convert pretty well.

However ive never emailed 5 million people. If you do Email 5 million, it is indeed LEGAL, if you obey the SPAM CAN LAW, you must do that or you may end up with a lawsuit.

It is probably illegal to send so many.

    1/ This will be spamming
    2/ Results will be bad
3/ Your ISP and partners will block you

I guess you won't be able to send so many emails anyway

I recently had a similar situation as this from with a friend/client. He purchased an email list and sent out a sample of his paper. He was actually selling nothing just giving out free copies of his paper to see if he could attract attention. What he attracted was complaints and being banned from Comcast.
Comcast TOS states that you can not send out emails to a rented or bought list. He was banned for 60 days. So in a way he got attention, just not the kind he was looking for!

Dont be a sucker these types of lists are nothing less than a rip off and a 1000% guarantee that you will be flagged as a spameer on all the black lists (spamhause, spamcop, etc)

If you have money to throw away you can always throw it my way :D

Sorry but you are talking out of your rear end.

Just because you add the CAN Disclaimer (Which is total BS anyway) it does not mean you are allowed to send ads to people that have not given you permission to send them ads.

I have had quite a few people closed down for doing so.

I've changed my mind on email marketing and now believe if it is not your own opt in list you are using it is totally useless. 5% is optimistic too - more like 3% but now (because of all the cack sent out by automated systems) it could be lower than 1%. How much does your 5,000,000 cost? What sort of person would really opt is to receive email from any Tom, Dick or Harry? I wouldn't touch it...

Key word here is quality over quantity. I can promise that if I has 20 well targeted members on a mailing list, I could make more money than you ever would off a 5 million e-mail list of opt in subscribers who have not opted into what you are offering.

This method is tacky, it smells like horse crap, and it not professional. Get a real job, earn your leads.

Exactly. I also get an email like that many times and all end up in the garbage. It's very annoying and useless. Remember, the first internet marketing principles that you have to do is what you have given them, and just wait what will you get from them after that. ;)

You would have more pissed off people than happy people. What would be the point? I agree this would be spam.
