Markup languages: Most well-known to general public; most usable?

I'm working on a project that will involve using some kind of markup language, and I was wondering what other people thought is generally the best to use for the general public - I mean people who are probably not that web-savvy and may well have only used WYSIWYG editors, maybe blogs, maybe forums.

I'm also trying to think of what the best markup language is in terms of usability. For example, WP's wiki ML is very simple, but I really don't like the bold/italics tags - ''' or '', I can never, ever remember which is which  and I bet nobody else other than hardcore WP editors can either.

I'm actually leaning towards something like bbcode, because it does seem very straightforward - [ b ] for bold, [ i ] for italic, how easy can you get? :)

Any other suggestions of alternatives I should look into? :)
