Hey guys, my name is Kyle and I make web design tutorials on Youtube. I may branch out slightly in the future but right now I am focusing on beginner web design tutorials. I know I will be doing this for at least the rest of this year, in the future, I may make some other types of videos within the internet and tech realm. My videos seem to do fairly well for how new the channel is and the content type isn't something that really should perform THAT well. So far all of the feedback has been overwhelming positive or at least very constructive which is great. I only have four videos and less than 200 subscribers, but, I got someone's attention. I got sponsored with only three videos. I personally believe my videos are produced in a way that is of fairly high quality and fairly unique in comparison to other channels with similar goals of teaching web design. I pitched my channel do a company I had previously seen as a sponsor on a MAJOR youtube channel that was in the business of selling domain names. I mentioned that these first early videos of basic web design tutorials are where their ads would be best placed since the viewers are likely looking for assistance in even finding a supplier of domain names. If I can provide my viewers with a discount on a domain name and make some money myself, I knew it would be a great fit for the channel. I had NO HOPE of actually hearing back, but I did, and they asked for TEN videos. Now I am under pressure to perform. I REALLY need to impress this sponsor, I want to perform well myself anyway of course, but I have a duty now to provide value to this company as much as I do to my viewers. Most of my traffic comes from Reddit currently, which is fine but I don't want to live or die by. I am looking for alternative ways to draw in new web designers. I have checked for Facebook groups or pages, and honestly, I can not find really ANY relevant groups or pages. I have found several pages that share coding memes, but they are more about memes and it's a page, so I have no way to post to it. Any of the groups I have found are filled 99% with Indian freelancers offering their services. I have a twitter I maintain and have some tools assisting me with, but honestly, I don't have a huge hope for GAINING viewers through Twitter, I think Twitter is really more for connecting with your audience outside of Youtube videos. Facebook page obviously created as well, with the same philosophy. I have been looking for strategies but not that I find would work with my type of content. I think what I must be looking for now is what I am sure everyone wants which is some sort of media coverage in some form. I know this is also very unlikely because I am not some interesting tech product, or some app, or a learning platform like Code Cademy. I am a Youtuber who makes tutorials. I don't believe there is a ton of value for me to offer to a journalist or something similar. What advice could you give me for marketing educational coding videos on Youtube?
I love watching coding tutorials on YouTube. One of my favorite YouTubers is DerekBanas. He makes a whole programming language in one video. And he covers EVERYTHING. I love his videos. What I am trying to say is that I personally think that all you need to do is produce quality videos that people are searching for. And to give yourself an edge, I suggest that you cover topics that have not been covered by another YouTuber. Don't expect to reach millions in a short time. Rather know that subscribers will build up organically overtime. I have an idea that will get your channel rolling. Why don't you buy Facebook, YouTube or Google ads for as low as $20.00 a day or week, whatever you like, for a year. After doing that you will get a lot of subscribers at the end of the year, and it will only get better from there.
My next video will be covering Flexbox, which has honestly been sufficiently covered, it's not the newest thing or something no one else has done, but I do believe the quality of my videos will bring in something, plus it's content. I do plan on experimenting a little with buying ads just to see if the work. I think I'll spend $25 to google and $25 to facebook on this next video.
