    Hi,

Just want to ask a few questions about marketing a site in a different country.

    1) In Germany ... what phrase do they use for vacations? travel?

    2) What domain extension is for Germany? (uk = .co.uk)

    3) If i wanted to launch a site for the German market should i use a .com or the local extension (what ever that is ... .co.uk = uk)

    4) Any tools out there show me popular keywords used by the German market?

    5) Any other tips when seo for a site designed for a set market place like another country and not the whole internet?

    Thanks inadvance.

I guess what you are looking for is
    DE = Urlaub
but seriously, don't go after the market if you don't speek the language. If you just want to know a couple of common words, ask me for free. Otherwise pay someone. It would really help to know more about the project. The German language can be quite confusing to non-native speakers, so I wouldn't advice using a dictionary. In fact thats about the worst thing you can do. You might as well use a babelfish program.

    hey andre :)

don't forget, if you target the german market have your site hosted in germany. when people search on google, many in non us countries search "locally" ie sites in their language or sites from their country. if your site has a german ip, it will rank much better on the local searches than if it has a US ip.

    thanks andre75 ...
    so Urlaub = vacation

So this is how Germans ask about travel?

The reason im asking is because in the uk they use the word 'holiday' and in the US i think the main way they talk about travel is by using 'vacation'.

anyone else have anything to offer

Well, Urlaub is what people talk about when they are refering to vacation. But when it comes to vacation travel there are many different expressions:
    Urlaubsreise <- vacation travel
In German, it is very common that two nouns form a complete new word (e.g. power plant = Kraftwerk, power = Kraft, plant = werk, power plant != Kraft werk)
I am not sure how this translates into SEO.
Urlaub is the correct term, you won't find a better one.
Feiertage refers to Holidays in a sense that those are the days off like Christmas, but Urlaub is when you take 2 weeks off from work. Hope that helps.

Yeah, but I moved to the US back in 2000. I got into SEO way later, so I couldn't tell you diddly about the german market.
One thing I do remember though, Germans are hard to please cheapskates with a frown on their faces at all times :p
I guess they are just as spammy as others, the first url i randomly tried: http://reisereise.de is a parked domain full of ads.

Anyways, you should defenitely go for a .de domain. Its as popular there as .com is here. I'd also host it in Germany (make sure thats the physical location of the servers, since google seems to pay attention to such things). Otherwise hire someone who speaks the language (unless you are just picking my head for keywords to your scraper script  )
