Marketing through spam

Why do people take time to post/autopost 100s of comments everyday without rest? They know these comments get caught by spam detectors on various sites. Even if a very few slip through spam blockers, the admins of those corresponding websites delete them... So, what is the use and need that these spammers see and what do they get by spamming your website/blog with 100's of comments day in and day out?

The spam to my blog has suddenly increased to about 800-900 everyday since I joined DP. Akismet caught every single one of those... SO, I don't understand what is the value that the spammers see here... Any ideas?

They use programs that do the spamming for them, 1000's of sites at a time. Sure, yours catches the spam, as will others, but some gets through. Since they put almost no time/effort into it, they don't really lose anything by having 95% of their comments not get through spam blockers like Akismet.
