Marketing on wikipedia? - How do people do it?

    Hey,

I have read on these boards that people market their sites on wikipedia, and get some good traffic. I am totally new to this, so can someone explain how this is done? What sites does it work best for, and how do you do it?

    Would really appreciate it!

    Thanks!

Unless your site is a leading authority site, expect your links to be removed. Also, all their links are ''no follow'' now, meaning it won't help your google PR.

It basically tells the search engines to pretend it's not there. So they can help you get traffic directly by people clicking on it, but not indirectly by helping you in google's rankings.

It means bots will no follow the link. It means the link doesn't help SERP.

Well untill spammers hit the board, wiki pedia was really good.

Gone are the days when you could get a lot of links from them, now if you have an authority site then yeah you will get traffic, ie if any of the mods think you are not spamming and leave you link intact. Else its good for nothing sorts when it comes to link back :(

Politician pretty much said it right. You'll get removed if your site isn't the leading authority.

Wikipedia is a very trusted site. I'd say having your link on there is a very good way to get human traffic...clicks from people who 'trust' you to some degree.

Wikipedia is my #1 source of uniques every single day. I think the only way you can get listed on the 'external links' section is if your site is information-related. If it's a sales site, don't even think of attempting to add a URL. I have about 25-30 pages on WP, as of current.

Even good content links are removed sometimes.
    The moderators are quite picky...

There are scraper sites that pick up all content on wikipedia sites, many of these sites don't have the nofollow tag. So it still is somewhat effective, just not as much as it was..

Yup. They've been hit so hard by spammers, that Wikipedia as a culture really frowns strongly on any type of external links. Even extremely high quality ones that are on the subject of the article they appear on. To some degree, Wikipedia is a playground for warring children. They have an article, or they call them "essays," on the subject of page ownership at WP, where one editor will refuse to allow any content (s)he doesn't like on a particular series of articles.

Best advice is to respect Wikipedia for what it's done right, not contribute to their spam problem, and promote your site honestly.

Browse Wikipedia for any pages that relate to your site. See what kind of external links are already there. If your site has pages that are better than those ones, then add your links.

Like they said, some editors will remove your links just for the hell of it. Or maybe they have their own links posted already and don't want to share the traffic ;)

I had stats that were on average for 1 particular site at 300+ visitors per month, I put it on Wiki and it the stats for the following month was doubled...it had a unique niche and I think online marketing gets deleted quickly.

It seems like some people have nothing better to do than to camp out on wiki removing any links or content that doesn't fit the picture for their perfect article. Wikipedia is a great source for information, but I think it defeats the purpose if one or more people dominate an article to the point that nobody else can make changes to it.

I wouldn't recommend using Wikipedia for even a legitimate marketing campaign unless you feel like having all your efforts reversed everytime you turn around. Even if you post good quality content there's a good chance someone will remove it 15 minutes later.
