Marketing my site: advice needed

Well, I'm really inexperienced at the whole marketing game. I have lots to learn and am doing as much research as possible. Can anyone offer suggestions on marketing my content-based site?

I won't start advertising until Summer of '07, a few months in advance of the season one launch date. But I'm putting together the pieces of my marketing plan now.

So far my ideas include adwords, and recurring ads in trade publications. Any other suggestions?

Get professional SEO done, and you won't ever have to spend money, except for maybe text links.

 

You might learn as much as you can about effective copywriting so that your ads (online and offline) don't tank (poor conversion).

 

start building a list of people who might even remotely be interested in your site.

 

Well, waiting out for outright advertisements till the needed time may not be a bad idea. However for the time being, building backlinks and getting listed on search engines may not be a bad thing. They do take time to build and develop so starting now should get you a higher page rank and some exposure as you approach the intended launch.

 

Hmm, thanks for the responses so far. Ugh. I have lots to learn but this definitely helps.
