We have little money left to spend on the marketing of www.ballz.com a new sports social networking site. We need to find ways to tell the world without spending very much money! …. before we can PR it to the likes of tech crunch and mashable etc ..

We’ve done most of the onsite SEO work we can and we are looking for some killer ideas to attract users to the site on a shoe string budget.

    Can anyone help?

It’s a fantastically capable website to connect people of all sporting ability or disability. Users can personalise their own selection of sports (over 200 popular and niche sports available), meet friends, manage teams and leagz, listen to news and read about their favourite sports, blog and comment on sports they’re interested in, get mobile alerts and updates, find local sports facilities and services and shop for products for over 200 sports.

    Thank you!

Well you just demonstrated one way of doing it...posting about it on forums. That will get the word out, but it's not allowed on most forums.

If your budget is low, start out with some free marketing strategies. Here are a few for you to think about:

Article marketing - Write articles about your area of expertise and submit them to article directories on the Web. Most directories will allow you to post a short profile and link to your website.

Blogging - Start a blog for your business. If you have your own domain, you can integrate a WordPress theme right into your site. Post regularly, but make sure you have something meaningful to say. Post about news, developments, and advances in your industry, new products that you are offering, interviews with industry insiders, etc.

Blog commenting - Many blog owners allow you to use a link to your site when you make a comment. If you are going to use this technique, make meaningful comments that add to the blog community's discussion. Post additional information, tips, a respectfully opposing view, etc. Just don't post spam or something that adds no value to the conversation.

Forum signatures - Post in forums that allow signatures. Once again, make sure your posts add value or provide information. Some posters here post original articles, offer advice to newbies, etc. Your forum signature can talk about your business and link to your site. Check individual forums for signature guidelines.

Write/distribute press releases - Press releases can help you generate free publicity for your business. If you don't have PR writing experience, defer to a professional. It will be money well spent. You can distribute your release to traditional media outlets or make the most of the popularity of blogs and websites and distribute your releases to these outlets as well. If you are going to be submitting releases to online news services, you will want to consider optimizing them for the Web (using links, keywords, etc. appropriately).

Write an e-book and offer it as a free gift for first-time visitors to your site. You can promote the e-book for free using forums, blogs, and other sites. Make the e-book something of value, not just some content hashed together into one PDF file.

Thanks so much - some really useful ideas there. We've done article marketing, blogging would be good if we had the funds to start a blog but commenting on blogs is a really good idea. Forum signatures is an good idea too.
    Cheers :)

what? I didn't know blogging was expensive? especially when you already have the domain name and hosting. Just make a directory, put wp on, link it from the main page and start posting

find sites related to yours and do a link exchanges like with a sports clothes online store, is one idea, brain storm and you will find more.
But only do this with sites related to your niche as if it isn't you will get traffic, but it won't be targetted, so they will just leave and not sign up
