Marketing ideas for my site?

Hi, i'm wondering if anyone has any particularly unique ideas for marketing my website. It is a gadget news blog, and the link is in my signature.

Of course, i'm aware of all the usual methods such as Digg, Forum Signature linking, etc. etc.

But i was hoping people could suggest something more unusual and more effective...

    Regards,

    G'day Oliver

You seem to be at the same stage i am at. I am using a couple of the below ideas that you may be interested in doing something similar.

I am making an advertisement for Youtube.com now my video advertisment skills are shocking, so I am basically trying to make the worst ad in the world. Hopefully it is something different and can get exposure from a different market.

I am also looking to place an ad on ebay. Yesterday i read that someone was selling their imaginary friend. You just have to be clever about the way you go about it.

My girlfriend owns a beat up old car. I am getting a big sticker made, and i am going to park the car in a prime position at the local train staton car park the night before my site launches. That way in the morning everyone going to work will see the funny old beat up car with my website on it

Start up a Myspace page, if you have got one you can add me, i am myspace/jakethoward

There are plenty of things you can do, you just have to be creative. I am also thinking about putting a sticker on my back on the way to work. You know how at school they use to put a sticker on someones back and everyone would laugh. well put a sticker on your back with your website address.

I am also writing to a couple of community news papers, they seem to appreciate local people acheiving things.

If anyone has any other unique ideas please share them.

    Cheers

    Jake

    Thanks for the post Jake.

It's odd that you mention the YouTube and Sticker ideas, as they are both things i've considered. I work in advertising as a video compositor for commercials by trade, so video editing isn't a problem for me.

I know a place that will print 10k stickers for around £150 (full gloss, full colour and permanently adhesive) as well, which is great. I work in London, so it wouldn't be hard to stick them places. The only issue with this that i've considered, is the possibility of local authorities getting in contact with me via the website if their are to many stickers around.

what about having the train run into the old car, that would make the news, and certainly bring people to your site.

great post, you have some great ideas

i've thought about the sticker thing myself in all honesty, it's a cracking idea that needs testing i think,

depending on the site content and what's it's advertising of course

also depending on the short and snappy sticker slogan or something to catch the eye and stick in someones head

but then again there's the thought of, what if i get in trouble for sticking things everywhere, so i come up with the idea of business card advertising and just dropping a few of those around now and then rather than sticking adverts to things, plus i use public transport twice a day so i could always polute them with the ads

    :)

    No worries Oliver.

I have the same concerns about stickers. I do not want to get in trouble, nor do I want to litter. You need to think of clever ways.
If you carry a back pack, put it on your back pack. People will see it on the way to work. I have also heard of someone sticking a sticker on the back of a bus, your sticker would go around and around all day.

Another thing that I am going to try is to get my URL on a peice of paper, about the size of a business card. I am then going to stick it on the inside door of a public toilet cubicle. The only person who wlill touch it will be the cleaner at the end of the day, as no one touches anything in a public toliet.

Another idea i had was to get a sticker and stick it in the mens trough at about mid height, to give the men something to aim at. I was also thinking about getting a ping pong ball and writing my URL on it and throwing it into the trough. How much fun would men have trying to move that ping pong ball around all day?

I think the trick is to do it in moderation. You do not want to bombard the one place with multiple stickers, as they will cotton on and maybe complain, however if you do one sticker if a range of different places, they will think it is a one off and not take it any further.

Also, a harmless place to stick a sticker is on a set of public stairs. Stick it on one of the top stairs facing people as they walk up. Everyone will see it and no one will bend down to pick it off.

There are plenty of things you can do, you just need to think outside the square.

To clear my mind about the thought that i could be adding to the littering problem, I also make an effort to go out an pick up 10 times as much rubbish as i distribute, that it clears my mind a bit.

Anyway have a go with it and let us know what you do and just remember you do not need to think big to get big results. If your site is good enough, then all you are trying to do is to get different individuals to notice it, hope that they visit your site and tell someone else about it.

Alternatively or additionally, you can advertise on my website when it is launched, and leave these crazy methods up to me.

    Cheers
