marketing ideas around a college campus .. looking for some input

I think it's great to have some offline promotion and you've got some good ideas but some online promotion too couldn't hurt. Try all of the free stuff. Craigslist, social bookmarking, myspace, squidoo, etc and get some of your friends and forum members to do the same.

 

What about campus radio or a local newspaper? sponsor a few shows , place adverts in campus publications etc.

 

i called the local newspaper.. but they want a rediculous amount of money just to place an ad for one day. and i think i'm going to look into sponsoring things when i get back to school

i'd love to do free online marketing, i tried myspace but for some reason myspace woudlnt let me cerate an account .. dont know why. i also want to make a bunch of youtube videos at some point.

how about digg and stumbleupon .. what can i do with them?>

 

I should have clarified about advertising on facebook. I didn't mean paying them money to show the ads on there site. I meant join the Facebook network for the school, get a ton of friends from it and advertise your page to those friends. If you have interesting content I am sure they will all be glad to check out the site and contribute. Advertising on Digg and Stumbleupon kind of seems like a waste because you are only looking for people within a small geographic area.

 

I don't know about the spraypaint idea - they might try to shut you down for vandalism...

But you could definitely post flyers EVERYWHERE - in the cafeterias (see if you could put in on the glass above the salad bar or at the cash register), in classrooms, elevators, water fountains, dorms, offices, etc. etc. I wouldn't even worry about it at night in the dorms - it would get noticed enough everywhere. Don't forget off campus too - restaurants, bars, drug stores, anywhere really.

Did you team up with the fraternities and sorrorities at all? Maybe you could "sponsor" a party?
You could also try getting everyone's email addresses and sending them an email if it's allow with the info...
You could get some t-shirts made and wear them around...or get a patch for your backpack?
What about a huge sign somewhere?
Could you myspace/facebook and look for people at PSU now? Or even used to be? Then add them as friends?

yea chelle.. i've made like 5 facebook groups .. i have like an average of like 40 ppl in each .. but a lot of ppl were joinin the group and not the site.

i posted 3 ads on facebook for today.. i put .50 cents per click and got like 15 or so and got one member so far

i sent out mad amounts of emails already and almost got kicked out of school for spamming the universities email

i think i am going to trash teh school with flyers/stickers tho next semester you mentioned a lot of good spots too.. i like the elevator thing.

and about the vandalism thing .. i thought about that too, i wouldnt want penn state to blacklist teh site, i'll have to think that thru

Yeah, that's a consideration. A better idea may be a natural product should as food dye (and dilute it) - it's cheap, then pour it in, and it should just disappear afterwards.

Another idea would be if there is somewhere dirty (as in a wall) that you could clean to put your name on it then do that. eg: a wall full of black soot, clean it but only clean it with your URL, so its like the snow idea except you clean the wall/area to stencil in your URL.

 

yea .. thats a good idea too.. theres not many walls tho, and i dont know .. like techinically can they even get mad if i spray paint the snow?? all somone would have to do is like walk in it and it will go away

 

Look at student organizations on campus to help you. Sometimes they have projects that they have to do, and they are always looking for ideas to do their projects on.

You'd be surprised how many people you could get to help you out, all because they need to make a grade for a class.

i'm gunna be marketing on facebook for a little and see how that goes, i put up 3 ads today .. got like 20 clicks .. and i think 2 member, and i spent like $8, tomorrow i'm adding 2 more ads and going to have them run all day and see waht that does for me
