Marketing For Domain Names - Domains can make you Rich

When was the last time you owned a 'famous' domain name? I recently closed a deal for $5000 for a domain name which was in fact for a famous sporting star. This guy is a rookie and he is 21. I bought the domain in 2004 for just $10 - I made a lot of profit with that.

The point of this thread is that keep your eyes peeled for rising, young stars in the media - snap up their domain names. They will become valuable.

Celebrity and sporting companies spend thousands and thousands of dollars marketing their stars. Imagine if you owned DavidBeckham.com? This domain could have made you well over a million because of its brand and its marketing.

Therefore, make sure you act quick. The domain market moves fast. Too easily the value of a domain can either fall in a short space of time.

.COM Domains are usually the ones you should be looking for.

    .net are second best.

Isnt there a possibility of facing legal action if the celebrities name you're using were to persue it? Or is that just trademarks?

Some are not trade marks. If you owned MikeTyson.com and did not want to give it up - then you would be called a "Cyber Squatter". This is where guys just buy domain names and then just simply want to profit. Then you would have to give it up. The domain name I owned (the owners did not trademark the guys name)

However, if you bought a domain name and converted it into a fan site and you had an offer then that would be a great idea.

You have to be careful with different domain names that you own.

There are issues related to cyber law, trade marks and cyber squatting. Anyway, its not an easy task to own a celebrity domain name.

You are right but I think personal names and brands are out. If you register a personal name, it may be taken from you through legal means without pay. Also, many logos, events and patents are covered by law. You cannot have them.

Nevertheless, simple domain names like hotjobs.com turned out to be worth millions after a few years. You are right, domains, devoid of legalities can fetch you thousands.

In 1997 I knew wsomone who sold Lotto649.com a massive lotto here in Canada. He made alot. Also know a guy who bought a pepsi related one.

You gotta go uber niche now as most 3 character and dictionnary terms went years ago.. Oh well!

My experience: the little more than year back I have sold one domain name more than for $10,000

This domain was very successful combination from 4 letters, and one large company (I shall not open its name) successfully used this domain under the abbreviation.

Now I own more than 50 expensive domains, a part from which, I successfully use on projects of my company. Till now on some of them I receive offers on sale. The sums are offered reach up to $7500-8000.

1 - think - choosing for itself a new domain name.
2 - use a software qualitatively to select word-combinations for the future domain.
3 - it will be successful to use a software like "Expired Domain Sleuth" or "Expired Domain Pro".
4 - analyze the market, similarly as you analyze niches of the Internet, at creation of the new project
5 - pay attention to new names and projects. Probably, having bought a conformable domain name you can perfectly grow rich.

Sincerely I Wish You Success in Your Business!

So making domain names, for maybe an upcoming basketball player out of college, good move? I mean the hype for him is real good, and once he gets into the NBA people are going to throw money his way, sign with Nike ect...GregOden.com..something like that?
