A lot of people believe if you build it they will come - never seems to work that way unless say you were selling cars and owned a domain like cars.com.
Plan. Have a reasonable, logical and strategic marketing plan. Sit down and take time to do it before starting on any marketing.
When people say to be careful when first using Adwords or it can end up costing you an arm and a leg believe them! Beginner trial and error learning with Adwords can get quite costly with little ROI so learn about micro targeting and optimizing your ads before diving in.
Biggest marketing failure may be PPC campaign in Adwords. We have to be careful about that. Without particular knowledge of the target market (content network etc.) it is easy to lose money on it without being able to recoup the money spent on adwords.
The biggest failure would be NOT taking action. There's a lot to learn in IM and it gets confusing really fast, but you have to get going and find out for yourself what works and what doesn't. Expect to stumble and fall over many times before you learn the tricks of the trade. The more you work in the beginning, the more you fail, the faster you will learn what works and what doesn't. The easiest way for a newbie is using free tools only. An easy plan would be something like this: 1) Go to Ezinearticles.com and read some article in a niche that interests you. Follow the author signature and see what products are being promoted. If you see the same product being promoted in many articles, then it's safe to assume it must be making some sales at least. 2) Go to Squidoo., Blogger or Hubpages and make a review style page about the niche and topic with affiliate links to the product in it (maybe from Clickbank). 3) Write articles about the niche and product and submit to at least Ezinearticles, ArticlesBase and GoArticles. That's the basics of article marketing and it works. Everything else is just tweaking.
Information overload. There's always more you can learn and as a result, you can always find an excuse to NEVER do anything. Do it, test it, see what works, and repeat.
The most important consideration about making money online is traffic. You'll have to know how to funnel and convert that traffic into sales, but traffic is number one. You can have the best website in the world; without traffic make you $0! So, you have to research ways to generate traffic. SEO, SEM, Article Marketing, Social Marketing, PPC, etc. Be careful of all the people who are promoting answers to generating traffic. You know, those salesy sites that give you THE solution...for a price.
Thinking I could make a serious at-home income without spending any money. It's the biggest delusion of the newbie.

best advice I can give to those starting out? never stop trying new technique. that is how you find what works better for you.. that is how you find you niche.. throw everything on the wall.. see what sticks...
Spend a lot of time developing a strategic plan. Whether it be a small text file walking through step by step what you need to do, where you need to visit and what the goal is. good luck in the future mate
Biggest thing a newbie can do is not take action...You can learn and learn some more but nothing won't happen if you don't apply the methods you learned
