When competition is huge, to make a difference have to spend on marketing/ promotion.
Big sites like Facebook spend tens of millions or more on marketing every year.
So I am interested to know roughly metrics like
what is average marketing cost per member signup?
    Average cost per million pageviews?:D

how much a member is worth to your site? on average I would say $20 / sign up.. so make sure you get to keep those members happy.. it is very expensive to acquire new customers..

pageview cost is easy... CPM normally goes around $2 or less.. targeted pageviews can be as high as $30 - $50

Targeted traffic is VERY expensive, I wouldn't suggest making a social networking site either unless it is TRUELY unique.
