Research SEO and PPC - you will most likely either need to optimize for SEO or pay for PPC (or both)

The best way to gain long term traffic is by increasing your SER (Search Engine Ranking), while the best way to gain short term traffic is PPC (Pay Per Click).

I personally use twitter for start-up traffic.

The great part is after you get a couple of thousands of followers you can start up almost any site.

It would be like the first breath of traffic to your site.

It's also good for testing conversions, favorite content, etc.

Here is a tip that may get you a few backlinks within 10 minutes. Register on a forum which discusses matters close to the products your ecommerce website sells. Then post a thread from one user asking where can I find PRODUCT A at a low price?

Then reply with another user suggesting your website.

Try blogs, directories and wherever possible.

MrCatana, stop posting bullshit in the hope that posters will click on your crap link.

It's bad enough so many inexperienced actually think that twitter works, only to be led down yet another dead end road.

Your conniving ass should be banned so hard, it'll bleed, and you'll run home crying to your momma.

Thank you Perry for the list! What about Clicksor and Infolinks? Those are the ones I've been researching and they were not on your list, that's why I ask. Are there any pitholes to avoid with those? PPC rates sure seem low compared to Adwords/Yahoo Marketing.

I would suggest to comment on some of the do follow blogs (must be relevant), but please keep the comment relevant to the topic. A few directory submission, article submission, and press release would do the trick.
Blog commenting on do follow is an ultimate process for getting targeted traffic and high pr. You can ask me for more details and advices..
    Thanks n keep rocking

cray820, then you did not do it right.

The big sites got to be big through advertising. They did it right.

And advertising doesn't have to be just about pay per click.

One thing, stay away from Google! Too damn expensive!

If you want to be successful, to make money on a consitent basis, you are going to have to advertise.

There is no way around it.

Hey, Mark. Sorry for getting back with you so late.

I asked around, and I couldn't find anybody using infolinks. Doesn't this site do just text ads???

Clicksor was surprising. Many advertisers who advertise for a living use them. I would definitely add that to the list.

Thanks for that one. I will be passing that along to my readers.

Since I do not use ad networks, the only thing I can tell you is to first show your ads to others for critique before buying ad space. Then buy their smallest package, and go sloooooow.

Pay per click rates with many ad networks are indeed lower than Google and Yahoo.

    Perry,
No problem, I always watch for your posts. Your answer prompts a few questions...
So far I understand: 1) You don't believe in SEO and you believe that paid advertising is the only real way to make money 2) You don't use Google as they're too expensive 3) You don't use less expensive ad networks we discussed... so... what DO you use except contacting webmasters directly and trying to advertise on their site?
(my guess would be that most of them ignore unsolicited requests and ones that agree are hard to work with as you have to monitor their traffic, get them to follow through and actually update their site with your ad, etc. But this is just a guess, I have never tried it.)
You're obviously an experienced marketer with a network of sites but you don't have them in your signature. If you can't disclose the sites, can you at least share the niche you're involved in?
When you say you "asked around", who do you ask? Is there a secret network of webmasters I can join so I can ask their advice myself? =) I have 8 domains that I plan to develop.
You said "I'll be passing that along to my readers". What's the link where we can read you? =)
    Thanks,
    Mark.

No, no...what I mean is that it is overrated. It's not that great.

Most of the organic traffic is notorious for not buying, there is a high bounce rate, and, the traffic itself is not that great too.

There are way too many out there just clicking away, hoping from site to site.

Many are bored, sitting at work.

Advertising is the only way to bring in a hell of a lot of visitors on a consistent basis, which, in turn, makes you a lot of money, on a consistent basis.

Yes. That, and why should I advertise with competitors on top and underneath me? Fuck that noise.

I advertise a little bit in the lesser-known magazines, and small newspapers. Down the road I'll expand into bigger magazines, and doing more newspapers.

I also use a LED sign and a door-magnetic sign on my truck.

    I have business cards.

    Word of mouth.

    Good guess.

So many dumb, lazy webmasters out there who want to make money, but they don't even bother to work with advertisers. Many don't answer my e-mail. Their loss, because it is easy money for them.

I will never understand people like that.

That is the hardest part in advertising, getting people to accept your ads. If you can believe that.

One webmaster I checked out had a site I wanted to advertise in. I offered him $250 a month starting out. If I did well, the price would go up. Did he take me up on the deal? Nope. I guess he didn't believe me. I don't know.

His loss. That would have paid the idiot's utilities, and then some.

I don't have a signature because they are worthless.

    The url is TheList.FM.

I am redoing the subdomain for men, so pardon its mess.

As an advertiser, I know of many who do the same as me, but they also work with networks. We all sort of met overtime via the Internet. We aren't friends, Internet pals, or whatever but just a bunch of guys who send one another e-mails now and then to ask "how's business?" We are all in different fields, we are not competitors, so we help one another out at times.

It's a list of past customers, and those who pay for a monthly membership.

I am changing all 3 of my subdomains from e-books to membership sites. A membership club, sort of speak.

I think those convert better. Well, I'll see, anyway.

Traffic - there are only two ways to get it - Earn it or buy it.

If you have a nice leverage potential of your site to make sales, you can always try to buy for example from PPC networks.

Having some SEO in place never hurts and it costs you almost nothing. That would be a good way to start.

It seems that text linking doesn't work either. i have linked with two other site who claim over thousands of link. I didn't expect great numbers but at least something to trickle in. what i got and still getting is 0 click.

I'm also trying to use twitter. so far that's not working but it could be because i only have 300 followers

How to Market Your Website in 5 Easy Steps

You need to put in as much effort to market your website as you have to develop it (in terms of both money and time). Even so, if you run a small business, you probably don’t have a lot of money to pump into a marketing campaign, at least in the initial stages.

So how do you go about marketing your website inexpensively and effectively? Here are five easy steps for achieving just that.

Step 1 - Make Certain It Is User-Friendly

Visitors to your site will be looking for information or will have an interest in purchasing your products or services. Hold their attention by providing precise information in easy-to-read language with no spelling mistakes.

Navigating your site should be simple, easy and quick. Make sure that tools like shopping carts are compatible with your design and that there is no undue delay in processing. Visitors are easily put off by cumbersome websites and favor sites that are fast and easy to use.

Try to create a signature website in bold colors and images, and try and keep the same template on every page. This helps visitors remember it.

Step 2 - Search Engine Optimization

A revolutionary method of cheap and effective marketing of your website is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In this method, you need to include meta tags such as keywords, titles and descriptions in your website content.

You should register your website with as many search engines as possible, such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN. SEO works through keyword placement and density; when a browser searches for the keywords included in your website’s content, the search engine will show your website in the results.

The higher your SEO rankings, the more visibility your site will get.

Step 3 – Spread the Word

Give maximum visibility to your URL by including it everywhere—on your business cards, letterhead and other stationery, on shopping bags, and in all your advertisements.

This helps your existing clients remember your website and also draws other clients in.

Another way to market your site is by submitting articles on other websites and providing your website address at the end of the article, along with a subtle sales pitch.

Step 4 – Make it Interactive

Visitors prefer interactive websites that help them get answers to their questions in a much more efficient manner. Include a feedback form asking your visitors to rank the various functions of your website, and be sure to reply to the feedback.

Newsletters are also effective marketing tools by helping to grow your list of customers that you can market new products and services to.

Step 5 - Affiliate marketing and PPC

Sign up for affiliate marketing programs, where you accept advertisements of other websites on your own website. These companies will pay you every time there is a sale on their website that comes through your site, and vice versa.

You can also ask other websites to include your website in their list of links, and do the same for them.
