Marketing a Tutoring Business

What might be some ways to market a tutoring business like one for math or science? Well, one way is to simply post flyers around a college campus. Another way might involve using paid ads, but often college students, who do a lot of tutoring, are short on cash.

Promote on-line on locally relevant platforms such as Facebook, Yelp or Craigslist.

You business is a local oriented one, so you can do both online and off-line marketing.

Also, you can do videos (soemthign fun about Math or somethng else) on Youtube and post them on social media. They always work.

    Hi:

JVZoo.com offers several products that claim to target local marketing. They are software based solutions, so you may pay $15-$30 for software that helps you target local customers. They launched a product about 3 weeks ago with that specific function. That program was B2B though, so that may not work for you. Go check out JVZoo.com and see if you can find a product that helps solve your local advertising problem. There are at least 5-10 products that all do something similar.

Short of that you can go to Facebook and look for groups that cater to tutoring and drill down to a local group in your area. You can also tutor via skype.

    Good luck.

Well tutoring business is tricky sometimes, you want to target who do need it so if you're going for paid ads make sure you have the timing correct so you reach them close to exams (not a day before but a month or couple months before) and right time of the day. Test and test various times and see which one gives you more juice for your money.
Some universities have their own bulletin boards which you can put up posters and ads, also online bulletins which they run for student jobs so you can put it up there too.
If by any chance a college would let you give out some in the class then that would be a gold mine for you :)
Groceries or some shops like restaurants close to university housing also let you place your ads or flyers there for students to pick up, those could be good too.

@jasontn are you asking us or telling us?

There are so many variables that we'd need a stack more information before really commenting but I know one local company who got a huge head start tutoring for school level exams by getting a handful of teachers to promote them. They only needed a couple of kids from each school to really make a difference. It's the "rinse and repeat" that gets tricky because they're relying on University students to deliver the program and they don't stick around forever.

Local marketing with the combination of online marketing will make sense. Weather you are a local company or only an online tutoring platform, you must plan for these two types of marketing to be more successful. Collaboration with school & colleges or online libraries will make a difference and help your tutoring business to build trust and reliability. Thus, a great reputation in the industry.

Social Media, posting to Local Facebook Groups, online classified ads
You can reach your audience with little budget for this type of business
A small targeted Facebook Boost would be an effective idea too. Even $1 a day reaches quite a few eyeballs. :)

Were I in your position, I would use a combination of online marketing and good old-fashioned word-of-mouth.

    1) Regarding the online marketing, it might be good to post to discussion groups associated with a school(s) in your area (with your tutoring business in your signature line). In your posts, you might offer a certain amount of free tutoring to attract students who might come to you for long-term help.

    2) Regarding word of mouth, if they won't get in trouble for helping you, it might be a good idea to introduce yourself, face-to-face or some other way, to math and science teachers in your area and offer them a referral fee based upon students who sign up with you. They no doubt have students in their classes whom they'd like to succeed but don't have the time to tutor themselves. They could always say to these students, "I know someone who...," etc. If they cannot accept a referral fee, you can always offer to buy them a cup of coffee, etc. The important thing is that you are making them aware of your existence. You might even ask them for permission to post or distribute flyers in their classrooms.

    Hope this helps!

JVinternet is exactly right, especially parents of high school students. Assuming parent/teacher/school administration meetings haven't yet gone the way of the Dodo Bird, teachers and counselors are in a PERFECT position to recommend tutoring. And if they just happen to have your business card or flyer, so much the better.

As mentioned, getting them to promote you will take a bit of finesse. If you offer to buy him/her a cup of coffee or soft drink, that will usually elicit a smile and if you can open the conversation with a funny quote like, "I'm looking for the best xxxx teacher in this school, and people tell me that's you. I had to see for myself." That can be a first step toward becoming memorable and building rapport.

Don't forget your old high school teachers, as well!
