Does anyone have experience marketing/promoting a lyrics site? It is really hard to get link exchanges with some of the top lyric sites. Since, my lyrics have to do with colleges, I was thinking of starting a myspace campaign and sending out messages to all the college groups and random students. Do you think this would be effective for fightsonglyrics.com?
Lyric sites are illegal (copyright infringement) if you don't have permission to print the lyrics. They are cracking down on these sites and even asking for jail time, so be careful. There are a couple sites that are trying to cut a deal to pay for the rights to post lyrics but I don't think they have come to any agreement yet.
I have to agree with mjewel I saw a TV show recently that specifically mentioned the illegality of home-made lyric sites. The publishers of the lyrics and song books are complaining about copyright violations and that lyric sites impact their ability to sell material they own the rights for. Regard, articleaddict
Well I'm not too worried about the legalities of it all right now. I'm providing lyrics to college chants at football games, not lyrics protected by the RIAA. A university would have to come after me.
The best way IMO is SEO. When I want to find lyrics I just do a search for "Song Title Lyrics" and click the first result. 99% of the time its exactly what I want, which is probably why I dont use simply one lyrics site.
For this SEO is the best, but if you're doing college lyrics why not pass the link around to fraternities and collegehumor to mock other school's chants?
