So, how do you propose I market a heavy metal site?
I know it is quite a popular genre, but not everywhere...

i would say start by making constructive comments on metal youtube vids and leave your link in it. Make sure you tell them its a brand new site.

I've tried promoting a guitar forum before, its one of the hardest projects i've took on and ended up giving up.

First of all, get some post in your forum. No one will join if its dead. Then make a bunch of cheap flyers and go to concerts and pass them out. Thats a good start

freelancesam, I can see why that would be hard to market. Not only are ".co.uk" domains hard to remember for visitors, the forums look dead. Maybe they just recently died though, from a lack of visitors.

To t-nine, it should be pretty easy to market your site actually. Try going to many popular guitar forums that are already well established and posting the link. I know a really good one is http://ultimate-guitar.com. Other then that, a lot of bands will have message boards or blogs that you can post on.

For example, one of my favorite bands Trivium has a message board located at http://www.trivium.org/board/. It gets a ton of guest views all the time, so your link would be seen by members and guests alike, and that's only one forum I've pointed out! Just try thinking outside the box, and think where Heavy Metal listeners would go on the internet. Then, post up your link, and they will come.

Don't forget bumper stickers. Maybe you can stick them on guitar amps at concerts or something :)

I bought sometime ago www.ratm.info which is a acronym for Rage Against the Machine. And a rare 4 letter domain. But I haven't had success making any money from it. I tried AdSense but I didn't have enough visitors. Any advices?

Try a little social media marketing. Start a MySpace page, for example, and send friend requests to a diverse spectrum of bands in different sub-genres of metal. For example, you could send requests to more mainstream bands like Trivium or Slipknot, but also to some black metal bands like Nachtmystium and Darkthrone, some grindcore bands like Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and hadcore/metal core bands like Converge, etc. Basically, just get a wide variety of bands within the genre to help appeal to different tastes. You could also reach out to other metal sites like Lambgoat for example, and Kerrang, etc or other music/metal related entities. Get your brand in front of as many members of your potential audience as possible.

You got it, just remember to keep up with it and engage in conversation. I'd keep an updated blog as well.

I own a musicians forum and a stevie ray vaughan blog. We could be link partners :)

Also, why not ask local music stores if you can put your flyer in their window? Offer them an advertisement on your website or something.
