Hey, im thinking about starting a forum, but would it be best to actually have a website?

Reason i ask is because i prefer the idea of just having a forum.

So for example it would be on domain.com not forum.domain.com

    Any opinions?

I think having a site is required. In fact you need a succesful site to create a forum. Otherwise it will be very hard to populate it

A lot of people create a site, then make it popular before opening a forum. I know of someone who owned a blog that was getting hundreds of comments per day. After a while of this, he created a forum on the site and disabled comments. On doing this, he started a very successful forum.
