Dropping the bomb brought a swift conclusion to the second would war. Had I been in his shoes I would have dropped them as well if my threats were not heeded - although I would give a pre-targeted warning shot out a bit at sea admittedly. However if they refused to surrender after a warning shot - I would have dropped the bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Except: Truman had only two bombs and no fast track to making a third Truman wasn't sure that either or both bombs would function The Japanese refused to surrender after the first bomb was dropped The Emperor refused to surrender after the second bomb was dropped, until his people forced him to
Will with you on all but the last one. It was the emperor who made the decision, and once that decision was made (after drawing out what, exactly, surrender meant), he very nearly lost his ass in doing so - at the hands of the would be "protectors of the imperial way." (p.s. - saw your response on the other thread - haven't had time to give it due consideration yet).
Hell on earth. From my readings of the fire bombing campaign and its effects, I'm not sure I'd opt for one more than the other.
Except that there was a war (or two) going on at the time and Truman had resources and people to worry about.
It goes to show that a civilised society does works ablaye. Those Marines are alleged to have done some bad things & are being prosecuted. Now how many fanatical Muslim terrorists or preachers get punished under Islamic law? Your saying that because you want the troops back to stop your admired people from being killed, you often flip flop back & forth don't you depending on the situation? i mean you called troops clowns (when Iran faced action for taking them hostage), turkeys & dumb before when it fitted your agenda, now their brave?
thats what you want him to think...since you can't handle it...anyone can flip things around to meet their needs...
I know there was a war going on, but by that time the Germans were defeated and all resources that could be focused on building more bombs would be allocated. We could have held the Japanese to the island of Japan with carriers and our battleships - bombarding them and preventing any sort of attempts to break out by annihilating the rest of their shipping while we waited on a few more bombs. Who knows, after a show of force and one successful nuke maybe they'd have capitulated without the necessary bombing of a second city - then we could have turned our fury on Mao when he came out of the mountains and prevented the Communist from taking China. Think of it - no communist influence in Asia. No Vietnam. No Korea. I'll give the first person to build me a time machine that works five dollars and a quarter.
This is nothing. I am sure they are doing far worse. Just look at what they did at Abu Graib. American soldiers are the worst of human kind.
The number Iraqi civilians killed by American soldiers that are supposedly there to look after them does not bear thinking. Unfortunately, there is no accountabilty whatsover. These American soldiers do as they wish.
I'm sure they do... not. We court marshall and jail soldiers that do wrong, and we have a population here who already hates the army. If we were what you think we are we would have already nuked the world.
Can i borrow your point of view for a moment? Just look what Osama Bin Laden done on 911 in the name of Allah, people who follow Islam are the worst of human kind.
