If you're cross-linking heavily, they definitely can tell and may penalize you.

It doesn't make sense that they would penalize you.

I don't think they would penilize you as a site is a site and all sites are really valuable to Google unless they have broken the webmaster guidelines.

I don't think they'd penalize you, as there are perfectly legitimate reasons for interlinking sites. Look at something like TomsHardware.com. There are links to TGDaily, TomsNetworking, MobilityGuru, etc, and more. Pretty sure they're all owned by the same person (or company). Now a site of that magnatude may be hosted on a few servers, but even if they were all hosted on one, I couldn't see being penalized for it, as it's totally legit.

That said, it's possible that Google might consider links from interlinking websites on a single server/ip to be of lower quality, so you might not get the same benefit as if you were to host your sites separately. But I don't think you'd actually get penalized for it.

Hmm yea but if you we're doing blackhat SEO and somehow you yourself banned on a certain domain, will your other domain be effected too?

I don't think so. I have prevously had 2 sites banned and my other sites didn't get affect.

I am not proud at all that I got banned and I didn't get banned for something that I new that would ban me. I was just making my site for my visitors and also getting my site seen on the Web by advertising. My sites started to rank well and then Google changed the alogorithum and made it a little stricter and I found 2 of my sites out of their index.

That's the problem with Google is that if you don't know nothing about their Webmaster Guidelines or if you are new in doing all this website stuff, then you maybe doing something that breaks their TOS and you don't even know about it untill you have actually got banned.

The reason I got banned I think is because I was using a 0 second metarefresh, which was only added to my 404 error page so that my traffic could direct straight back to my home page if their had hit a 404 error page.

Now at the time I wouldn't have ever thought that would have caused a problem as it was actually on a 404 error page and no other page, but now it seems that it must have been breaking their TOS as when I changed it and contacted Google that I have done changes and are now following all their TOS I then got back into their index.

I think this is happening to me so I am getting cheap $10-$20 hosting accounts and spreading around my sites. It kinda sucks. I hate SEO and Google..they can freaking DIE!

I have about 200 sites on one server and of course I interlink some of them as they are mostly in the gaming genre. At this point I just wish I never heard of SEO and simply worked on my site.

I wish I never knew what that search did.

You do not get penalized for linking sites together on the same server.
