Many Directories don't seem to be adding new sites

I have been submitting sites to directories for a while now. I started by submitting to high PR sites that were referred by users on this and other forums. I received a very high percentage of my sites that were indexed in these directories.

Lately I have worked my way down to other PR4 and PR5 directories but have found that a very low percentage of my sites have been indexed in these directories. Since many of these directories are not overly crowed, it is obvious that I search

So, from what I have observed is that there are quite a few directories that are not adding new submissions. Anyone noticing similar results.

I have similar experience. Many of the free directories seems to have inactive editors. Probably it is their way have to force you to go for the paid submission.

Not only have I noticed that some directories don't list my site, but sometimes when they do list it, it's so deep in the directory, it is worthless in PR.

I think we are seeing the downside of the current "Everyone has a directory" fad. So many are being created a day, its no wonder they are being abondoned en masse. Maybe people tire of the submission process after a while, maybe they got their coop weight or other benefit, or one of many other reasons.

Of course you could still submit to Kwik Goblin ;) (Doing my best to add to the problem)

I have noticed the same thing lately... it's kinda a pain in the butt to sit down and work on directory entries when half of them tell you they are not accepting new entries...

I wrote about this phenoma in Improving the ROI of Web Directory Submissions .

    Quoting me:

"A survey of 79 general-purpose web directories revealed that 62% of those web directories do not appear to be processing submissions. "

"In many cases, this is because the operators of the web directory launched their site with great enthusiasm, became overwhelmed by the amount of effort required to maintain a web directory, and stopped maintaining their directory. These operators leave their directories online to take advantage of the residual advertising revenue, but no longer invest the time required to process directory submissions. "

I prefer it when they tell you straight up rather than me spending precious time submitting a bunch of sites to them.

Very well said. Unfortunately, you have no guarantee that a directory that added your site 3 months ago will add your new site today.

Keeping track all the directories is a very time consuming tasks.

    Trust me, I know.

I maintain a list of over three hundred of them in the FAQ.

I started my websites about 2 months ago and I have submited to directories ( 3-5 each weekday), but currently I have more backlinks from forum posts than from directories.

Maybe directories shold be like forums

I agree. Some add your listing in a day, some never.

For run of the mill directories, I just "fire and forget".

I hate when people do that. I try to aprove / delete new links in 24-48 hours, and I see people that put their site 3 or 4 times in 24 hours, sometimes in diferent categories.

I have never held high regards for most directories in the first place. So many were there to harvest e-mail addresses or if they charge and they are not well known then what is the benefit they charge for?

I am always suprised when someone starts a new directly. However, the biggest most popular directory still may not have even been concieved yet. Shawn will come up with something that will kick butt.....
