Manchester United are the current Shield holders after beating rivals Chelsea at the new Wembley Stadium 3-0 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time. Great start for the new season.
As big a man u fan as I am, i have to say I was a little nervous about the prospect of a penalty shootout; given Van Der Sars sporadic displays of goalkeeping insanity throughout last season - however he really rose to the occasion when called upon This is the first time Man U have beaten Chelsea since Jose took the reigns; definitely a great start and a huge psychological advantage (although no doubt jose will be blaming injuries again because, of course, he's the only manager who has to deal with those things) I was a little disappointed in a flat performance from Nani - after all the hype and his pre-season achievements I was hoping for a bit more spark, especially between him and Ronaldo
Not a bad game but why a penalty shoot-out at the end? Why not just let them share it? This year's worrying trend - sponsorship logos. As well as the main sponsors name on the front of the shirt there were smaller logo patches on the sleeves and Man U had some sort of 'label' thing on the back. If we go on like this football shirts will resemble something out of Formula 1. (One of the reasons why my 'big' team is Barcelona).
Four different teams have won it now in the last four years. Second time unlucky for Chelsea- they lost to Liverpool last season. It would have boosted United's morale no doubt, for a trophy is a trophy and a win is a win, especially against Chelsea.
