Manage Affiliate Links? Changing products, and Redirects?

I'm just getting started with CJ, but this should apply to all affiliate programs.

    Say I like horses.
I'm a CJ member and and find a product about horses.
    I get the aff link.
I go over to my favorite horse forum and put my affiliate link in my sig.
I leave some comments on some blogs with the affiliate link.
I find some pages on my website that are appropriate and post the aff link.

    okay, good

Now, say the horse product cuts their commission, or drops their product.
I don't want to send traffic anymore.
I have to go back to the horse forum and change my sig.
I can't do anything about the blog comments.
I have to find all the links on my website and change or delete them.

    what I've seen:

Some guys forward to a page on their own site like mysite.com/horses, which redirects to the aff link. Is this the best way to do it?

I've seen HTML and Javascript and .htaccess handle it. I think it's called a 301 redirect (?)

Anyway, the bottom line is, I can post a bunch of aff links, but if/when the product changes it'll be a pain to remember to edit some of them and some I can't edit, so I'm looking for advice.

It would seem that a redirect would allow me to simply find a new horse product and replace the old link in just one place.

Now to throw another twist into it, I've seen some affiliates NOT ALLOW redirects. Is there a way to handle those?

Why not use landing pages on your domain to host links so you can change on the fly when something goes awry?

    Cpanel points a sub-domain to a sub-folder.

Do you think a subdomain is better than a subdirectory? or doesn't it matter?

Well actually, I was assuming a landing page in between would cause some of the visitors to go away, but maybe a landing page on my site, like you say, is a better way to go. Maybe it'll warm them up a little.
