    We didn't think he was safe. He didn't cross into Canada carrying those weapons. It was YOUR guys who let him into the US...

    That was part of what confused me about the furor about our leaky borders after 9-11. I agree Canadian immigration policy is a total joke. Therefore, we have to accept responsibility for allowing terrorists and war criminals into our country and then allowing them to stay for decades while they inititiate appeal after appeal even once they've been identified as undesirables and criminals.

    But...

    Who let them cross the border into the US?

    No. In Canada, it used to be 3 years (well, a long time ago it was 7, but never 10) and current law indicates that you are considered to be a committed couple for purposes of property division and similar legal issues after one year.

    In California, I believe it's 4 days... due to the high turnover rate in LA and Hollywood. :eek:

    Dunno about the USA but you don't even have to be shacked up to be a common law wife down here. So long as you can prove your relationship is like that of a marriage that's good enough. But 2 years is the "normal" benchmark.

    You've got to wonder who they employ on the borders don't you!

    8 years ago I came to the States for a 2 week IT training course. Flew in to San Francisco and got through Passport and Customs ok when I got bailed up by some official looking guy. I'm no Lady78 so I knew he wasn't hitting on me and flattery wasn't going to get me anywhere. I wasn't sure of the rules for training courses - are you working? are you on holiday? I didn't have a visa for anything so wasn't allowed to work...

    He wanted to know what I was there for and so I told him and he kept grilling me so I gave him more information and then more. Turned out he wanted less information! Instead of getting into the intricasies of Oracle versus Sql Server he wanted "software" and I was free to go.
