We argue and fight a lot, but I have mad, crazy respect that you are home schooling your children.

You're giving them a leg up on everyone else.

I have little understanding of what homeschooling actually means. Here, we place a lot of importance on government schooling. Schools do not have permission to set up their own syllabus. Everything is directed by the government. And finally, there are those board exams, conducted by the state government.

If you don't have education from a government-recognized school, teaching government-approved syllabus, and using government-subsidized books, which are printed in government Press, then you don't stand any chance to get admission into higher education institutes.

What you have is a system of state control. They control the syllabus, they control the accreditation process that higher education provides for the workforce.

But the question is, in a rapidly changing world, who audits their syllabus? What if only one perspective, one historical account is taught? What if it is the wrong one?

Homeschooling kids are in high demand (from what I have read) by US colleges these days.

I "homeschooled" myself in addition to traditional learning.
Read a few books and a few websites and asked a few people.
I taught myself a lot of stuff :D

Syllabus has remained unchanged for more than 2 decades now. Foreign institutes are barred from opening shop in India, coz of archaic socialist laws, red tape, corruption, and basically, to prevent competition to local educational institutes, which are mostly owned by politicians.

I am sure you love to read. That is why you could homeschool yourself. It sounds very interesting.

The child would grow up with no friends and be socially unaware.

    This is an urban myth.

It has been disproven by study after study. Homeschooled kids actually score better on socialization tests.

I think we actually agree on a lot more than you realize. Thank you.

I say all the way to 99 years old, after that they are on their own. LOL

This sounds like hilary's plan. California will probably end up banning homeschooling (at least without complete control) Washington requires a teaching degree (or ?)

This comment always cracks me up.

I see more homeschool kids with the ability to communicate with adults on their (the adult) level. Some homeschooled kids I know put to shame many posters here on their ability to communicate and especially reasoning. Seem schools teach our kids not to use reasoning and common sense, in fact they promote the "sheeple" mentality that AGS has acquired to its fullest.

I normally don't like to partake in such debates, at least not on here.. however, as I'm English and a tax payer this "problem" is one that bothers me a lot.

I do believe there have been similar stories in the past (about white people) and there was even a TV series made about it (Shameless). Unfortunately, post-9/11 has brought more of a focus on the "immigrant"/"minority" in the "news" issues but the average person in the UK knows there is a problem/leeching of the system irrespective or race/colour.

The problem in the UK is that the welfare system is too soft and the system in general is too orientated towards "minorities". As a white working man there is no assistance to help me get a start in life, such as with housing (council housing, which you eventually have "right to buy", is out of the question as I am white and have a job) even though purchasing one is out of my reach in the current housing market.

Yes, white people ("charvers") are claiming benefits too and they screw the system by going on permanent sick (I guess they must pay off a doctor to their claim of debilitating illness), for example, so they don't even have to look for work. I don't care whether someone is white, black, middle eastern, Asian or whatever... I don't like leeching scum at all.

However, it does annoy me that people can actively be anti-UK yet leech of the system. It's hypocritical. While I respect the freedom to thought and expression, if the system was as bad as these people believe and try to make out then they would have nothing - not the freedom, benefits, health, education or standard of living. Instead they'd be living in some rat-infested slum eating scraps and dying young.

Sadly, the system is too soft and they will never appreciate it (nor will the white people). It is designed for those who know how to manipulate it. If you're honest and working then don't expect anything from the government.

His comments regarding university are a load of crap (along with many of his other comments, such as believing he is not living in a democracy - if that was the case he wouldn't be in receipt of so many benefits). Unless his kids are planning on not working after they graduate then it's completely affordable to study in the UK. Repayment of course fee is a low amount per month and only starts once you have a job paying over a certain amount (£15,000? perhaps more these days). Sure it is a debt but it should be easily dealt with by a graduate who bothers to work. There is also a grant (which does not have to be paid back) to help cover costs while studying.

Oh - I agree with LinkSales that £30,000 per year is enough money for a couple and 11 kids, if it's in the form of welfare. Food and clothes are cheap in the UK, housing and energy are expensive but neither are a huge worry when living off welfare. The only exception may be London.
