    They said he was on "private business" in Iran. I thought it was illegal for US citizens and companies to conduct business with Iran.

    He likely wasn't doing business "with" Iran, just "in" Iran. He was an private investigator, both with his own firm and with Business Integrity International.

    It looks like he was working with a Canadian documentary effort. Most likely, he saw the wrong thing and had to be killed to keep him quiet.
