Hi to all, I am running a contest site and would really love a feedback on my site. My URL is http://www.emenang.com or http://www.malaysiacontest.com Things that i always wanted to know is what will be my visitor 1st impression when they visit the site. How long does they need to wait to load the page and will they visit it again or not in the future. All your comments is highly appreciated. I can also give a feedback on your website as a trade if you wish to. Cheers, Sha ps/ Anyone who has similar site like me and wish to exchange links please do let me know. I will be happy to trade a links with you too.
May i know which url are you using? emenang.com or malaysiacontest.com? I receive same feedback especially visitor from outside malaysia. Perhaps its because my web server is located in Malaysia? Would you care to try again and share with me the latest update? Thank in advance for visiting my site and sorry for all the inconveniences caused. Cheers, Sha
I see.. Thanks for sharing. I'll see what is causing the problem. Thank you again for visiting. You guys are the best! Cheers, Sha
I've made some script changes on the main page. Appreciate if can test again whether it still slow or not.. Tqvm.. Cheers, Sha
Both URLs took about 6-7 seconds to load (UK) to the point where I saw something plus another 2-3 seconds to finish downloading completely (according to the status bar). Initial Impression Good template. Looks nice. Second Impression A bit busy - lots of information and I'm not quite sure where to go first. Is there some reason you're using the 'Spring Widget' rather than just having the text directly on the site? Latest Forum Update Section Do you really need the contest winners on the front page? A single link somewhere to a seperate page may be better. There's an awful lot of HTML encoding showing through such as: [FREE+ONLINE+SLOGAN] MY FM - 《四月份本月大 [FREE+ONLINE+SLOGAN] MY FM - 《四月份本月大 Code (markup): which makes it difficult to read. Ahh... Ok, looks like it's foreign character sets rather than HTML encoding. What I see (minus the spaces) is [FREE+ONLINE+SLOGAN] MY FM - & # 12298; & # 22235; & # 26376; & # 20221; & # 26412; & # 26376; & # 22823;& # 2 [FREE+ONLINE+SLOGAN] MY FM - & # 12298; & # 22235; & # 26376 ;& # 20221; & # 26412; & # 26376; & # 22823; Code (markup): This probably won't be an issue for your target market. If you could make the font slightly larger and the gap between each entry (line spacing) bigger, that would make it easier to read.
Thx mr edward for the useful comment Font slightly larger.. Bigger line spacing.. Split contest winner on other page.. Ok, got it! Thx bro. Now for the other things, I'll try explain it here and maybe you can give some comment too. Spring widget I put a spring widget so that it will belnd with the site much better. To give some nice look but do you think it will spoil the site? I wanted to put like 10 latest new contest but if i use a simple text rss feed and put it on the main page then it would be really long page. But I'm open to ideas. What do you think mr edward? should i remove it and just text or keep using the widget? Foreign character This is due to my phpbb limitation at the moment. Still fixing this issue but if it cant be resolved then I will just ask my forum member to post all topic subject in plain English . Those '[FREE+ONLINE+SLOGAN]' that you see is my subject tag that i implement in the forum. This way, other member can learn straight away what kind of contest is it without going through the whole message. I just wondering is it ok to put the cartoon at the main page? I dont know but i do like some comic strip to put some energy on the main page but then again what would I know rite? Cheers, Sha
Actually, I think it looks nice. It blends in quite well. My concerns were mainly to with SEO. By having your links in the widget, the search engines won't be able to see or follow them. At the moment the widget shows (something like) the following... SONY Discoverhdmedia Contest TITLE: SONY Discoverhdmedia Contest PRIZE: * 1 x Sony HD Handycam HDR-HC7 and 5 x Sony HD Mini DV Tape * 1 x Sony HD Handycam HDR-UX7 and 5 x DVD discs DEADLINE: 5pm on 20 May 2007 WEBSITE/URL: http://www.discoverhdmedia.com/ DESCRIPTION: Qualifying Entrants 1. The contest is open only to residents and permanent residents [who are 18 Code (markup): ...and yes, having 10 of these would make for a long page. How about instead... SONY Discoverhdmedia Contest PRIZE: * 1 x Sony HD Handycam HDR-HC7 and 5 x Sony HD Mini DV Tape * 1 x Sony HD Handycam HDR-UX7 and 5 x DVD discs DEADLINE: 5pm on 20 May 2007 Code (markup): ...we've gotten rid of the duplicate title and the extra information can be seen by clicking through to the details page. 10 of these wouldn't take up quite so much room and would still allow you to get the SE's following your links. If you link from the title "SONY Discoverhdmedia Contest" to the details page, you may also get some good rankings for longtail keywords. As for whether to use the widget or text. This depends upon what you want to achieve. If you're after organic results, then you need to lose the widget. If you don't particularly care about the search engines, then it's more a case of asthetics (and it does look nice). I don't know much about Internationalization, but from what I do remember reading, there ought to be a simple remedy simply by telling the browser which encoding type you're using. At the moment you're using a few different types. Wordpress:<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> Main page:<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> Forum:<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> Code (markup): Ideally, you need to stick with one. UTF-8 seems to work (since this is the sort of stuff that Unicode was designed for). Try changing the main page to UTF-8 and see if it makes a difference. I'm not sure how to change this in phpbb but I suspect it would just be a change in one of the template files. Don't see why not - From an SEO point of view, you just need to be aware of leaking page rank to an external site. I especially like "savage chickens" but the one you've got on there at the moment made me laugh.
Again, another brilliant comment from you. Thank you very much! I'll try it asap and glad you enjoy the strip Cheers, Sha
