Malaysia Muslims protest proposed Hindu temple

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Dozens of Malaysian Muslims paraded Friday with the head of a cow, a sacred animal in Hinduism, in a dramatic protest against the proposed construction of a Hindu temple in their neighborhood.

The unusual protest by some 50 people in Shah Alam, the capital of Selangor state, raises new fears of racial tensions in this multiethnic Muslim-majority country where Hindus comprise about 7 percent of the 27 million population.

The demonstrators who marched from a nearby mosque after Friday prayers dumped the cow head outside the gates of the state government headquarters. Selangor adjoins Kuala Lumpur.

Protesters stomped on the head and spat on it before leaving the site, Xavier Jeyakumar, a state government official in charge of non-Muslim affairs, told The Associated Press.

"This is a sign of disrespect, insensitivity and a huge insult to the Indian community," he said.

Such an overt display of religious discord is almost unheard of in Malaysia, which has carefully nurtured racial harmony among its three main ethnic groups, Malay Muslims, Chinese and Indians, since 1969 when the country suffered its worst racial riots.

The demonstrators said their neighborhood, Section 23, has a 90 percent Muslim population and building a Hindu temple there was inappropriate.

"If there is blood you (the government) will be responsible," Malaysiakini, an independent news Web site, quoted a protest leader Ibrahim Haji Sabri as saying.

"I challenge (Selangor government leaders) to go on with the temple construction. I guarantee bloodshed and racial tension," Ibrahim said amid chants of "Allahu Akbar," or God is great, the Malaysian Insider, another news Web site, reported.

Both sites posted pictures of the protest showing a bloodied cow head.

Muslim Malays and the Chinese and Indians — who are Christian, Hindu, Sikh and Muslim — have generally been careful about not offending each others' religions.

But racial tensions have risen in recent years amid complaints by the minorities that their rights are being eroded along with the rising influence of Islamic hard-liners.

Human Resource Minister S. Subramaniam said the incident infuriated Prime Minister Najib Razak, who asked the national police chief to investigate. Witnesses said police stood by and did nothing to stop the protest.

The demonstration, which occurred days before Malaysia celebrates its independence day on Monday, comes amid a new campaign by Najib to promote national integration by emphasizing equality of all races.

"The prime minister said he was very upset over the incident and wants it to be nipped in the bud," Subramaniam said in a statement.

The protesters condemned Chief Minister Khalid Ibrahim of Selangor, one of four states controlled by a three-party opposition coalition that includes an Islamic party. The demonstrators described Khalid, a Muslim, as a traitor to Islam. It was not immediately clear if they were affiliated to any political group.

The Malaysian Insider quoted a protest leader, Mohammad Zurit Bin Ramli, as saying a temple would disturb Muslim practices.

"The temple will disrupt our daily activities like prayers. We cannot concentrate with the sounds coming from the temple," he said. source

 

If they protest peacefully then I would say theres nothing wrong with it, because they have a right to their own opinion. Murdering Hindus will be taking it too far, which what it looks like it will end up in.

Why after Friday prayers instead of being energized for Love and Peace the Islam followers resort to HATRED?

What did they pray in the mosque for? And why so often after Friday prayers muslims go on protests? Look what is going to happen if Islam takes over the west and you better believe it.

many muslim groups are saying there will be bloodshed if any non muslim temple is built near a mosque

what is very very scary is they have hundreds/thousands of people ready to fight for these islamic groups..just for the sole purpose of cleaning out non muslims...

hope laws around the world make crimes like this much harsher...especially majority muslim nations

 

For all the people who try to use these kind of threads to prove their religion is better, I just have one advice. Grow up and smell the coffee. It is the 21st century and all religions no matter if it is Islam, Christianity or Hinduism is equally bad and backward thinking.

That's true. But with an important difference when we look not at religions, but at the countries:

In some islamic countries (Yemen, Saudia, Iran, afhganistan, sudan, etc'), building of churches or hindu temples is prohibited by state law. And lets not mention other laws, which are plain and simple: prosecution of other religions by the state.

In no western country, building of mosques is illegal. Yet.

 

And how did you find out Christianity was equaly to Islam bad and backward thinking?

I never read that after Sunday's prayers Christians went on protest and threatened bloodshed.

But no one is surprised if muslims do such a thing.

Again I don['t say Islam is all bad, but there are many really bad things in it that are absolutely unacceptable to the west. More mosques in the west means more potential danger for them, that sooner or later it may be used as a ground for violence and intolerance. Building a mosque is not for them like building a hospital where people will get help when they need it.

Even if you and many of my muslim friends are non violent the small percantage of the violent muslims can do great harm. Many people are required to build a building, but only one bad guy is enough to destroy it.
And as everyone knows violence is permitted and embeded in Islam and no one can take it out.

 

We don't need to mention Bush or Christians but how about priests and nuns? Just read a little before you show more of your bigotry. Do you know how many priests and nuns have been involved in murders and crimes against humanity? How about nuns that Vatican is hiding in different monasteries in order to shield them from prosecution for crimes against humanity?

If you check no, it says the site is only open to non-muslims aged 18 years and above. I just thought that was kind of strange, couldn't they just go to the concert and choose to drink or not to drink?

The whole history of Christianity is full of violence, just read the history but bigots always refuse to see what is in front of their eyes. The protests against building Mosques in my previous post happened in western countries. The simple fact is Islamic fundamentalist and Christian fundamentalist are equally shitty people, it just makes me laugh when one group tries to show that their shit is better than the other guys.

A Christian is the one who OBEYS THE WORD OF JESUS AND DOES IT! If nuns and priests disobey it, they are not Christians. As simple as that. Everything else is just an empty title with no Christian content in it.
