Making text on images crystal clear

Ok, I always design my images at the size that they will wind up being on the page.

For instance if I need a logo that is 300x50 pixels, I'll open a new image that's 300px by 50px.

Now that I'm getting more into designing some of my own graphics, I'm seeing that when I throw text on these images, they're often not as clear as they should be...

For example, this is one that I did yesterday:

Can you tell that it's not perfectly clear on the sides? Is that because the font has limited antialias abilities?

I'm just wondering why it's not turning out as nice as other people's designs...

    Thanks...

EDIT: do you guys normally design stuff at a higher resolution, then shrink it down when you're done? Does that help?
