Making RAID 1 without wiping the disk?

So I have a hard drive with Windows install on it and I bought a second hard drive of the same size, and I would like to make hardware RAID mode 1 (mirroring) out of the 2 drive. The question is can I add the second drive and declare them as RAID 1 in BIOS without destroying the data on the 1st drive, or declaring it RAID will format both drives? I could clone drive 1 to drive 2 before changing it to RAID, if it matters. Have anyone done this before?
