If you are reading this, then you are probably interested in making some money from affiliate marketing, and we are not talking about pittances here. We are talking about a real income, the kind of income with which you can effectively supplement your normal income, or the kind of income that allows you to quit your normal job. Seriously, who could not do with a little more money nowadays? Also, if you can make enough working from home for only a few hours a day, wouldn’t you be interested too?

Well, the fact is that it is not easy to make supplemental income from affiliate marketing, let alone full-sized incoming cash flows. It takes a lot of skill, the right personality, and a fair bit of luck. All of that starts from knowing what it is that makes affiliate marketing work.

Affiliate marketing works through several implementations, but by far the most common form is the PPC or pay-per-click model. With this implementation, each affiliate individual is given a unique URL to use by the hiring company. This URL is built in such a way that when someone clicks on it, the company can trace which of its affiliates scored that click.

The PPC model produces very little money for the affiliate per click. Simply put, you need lots of clicks to make some money. That is where skill, personality, and luck come into the equation.

First off, you want people to click that link, so you have to convince them. This means that you will need to do some talking and coaxing. You cannot just push it on people otherwise they will ignore you, block you, or worse report you for abusive behavior. Charisma and personal appeal get people to listen to you, to trust your opinions, and in the end clicking your links. With the challenge of getting people to actually click those links, you then must turn to the problem of scale.

Successful affiliate marketing for the individual requires large numbers of people clicking on your behalf. We are not talking about having people click for you, but rather having people interested enough to click the links of their own volition. In order to reach that great number of people, you will want to connect with lots of the right people. If you are really good at writing and people find your style amusing, then you could start a blog and do marketing from there. On social networking sites, you can look at profiles and invite those who might be interested to connect. What you want is that, over time, your few connections will expand by word of mouth and recommendations.

Improving and maintaining a good image is key to affiliate marketing success. Publicity, image, profile, branding, you name it, it’s important. People need to see you in a trusting light, they need to be able to believe in your words. Regardless, it is nigh impossible to effectively market a bad product or service, so always use your common sense and pick the right thing to represent. Good luck, and happy hunting!
