I think the most valuable asset from a forum is the subscriber list. You can publish regular newsletter with the list and sell ads space in the newsletter. This is better than paid membership which most people resist to signup.
For forum,visitor is not the important part. You need to have a lot of activities and poster to make your forum popular before you can start make money.
