every HUGE site starts with a single file
if you want to learn to do all yourself - that's the perfect way
hence start with simple system and grow your site as YOU grow in your own experiences. i.e. always USE techniques and scripts YOU understand fully - thus allowing you to make changes or corrections where needed while KNOWING what you do rather than being dependent on others' advice and waiting for help each time thigs go wrong.

huge educational site requires huge amount of time
huge means something in the range of a few to several TEN thousands of hours work ( I have a "big" NOT huge site and worked some 60'000+ hrs on it duriing past 11+ years full time work.

    Good luck

Well, I mean this is really a bit of a nice process to think and start about.

I mean first, you need to do research, (which is appears you already have), i mean as far as using wordpress, that is a good idea because it is a nice backend to edit and create your content, and wordpress has a huge and I mean HUGE amount of plugins for it, so that wont be to big a problem.

Also, another recommendation would be using maybe Joomla, it is a nice CMS, that has a ton of free plugins for it as well.

But, back to the main topic at hand, creating and everything. What I would do first, is I would test out both CMS (Joomla and WOrdpress) and see which one I like best and which is easier to work with for me. Then I would get a web designer or do it your self if you could, and design a nice looking professional template for your site.

Once, I have my template done, I would start on one thing at a time, I would start on one service offered at a time. Figure out what type of plugin that section or service needs and start from there. Doing one thing at a time eliminates alot of stress that can come from working on a huge site like this.

That is really the best thing to do, find your cms that suites you, get your template, and do things one step at a time until it is all complete.

I hope this has helped, if you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

PS. We are a very popular web development company if you need help with your site.
