I have just ahd a phone call off a potential client, and they are based in Holland, but have a holiday/diving company that focuses specifically on the UK. They say they have pretty good search results on a global scale, however they are getting no UK customers, all the traffic is from other countries. They do no appear high up at all when you google for the UK. Now my question is how would i improve this my ideas so far are: The content of the site does not focus on the fact it is a UK company so change the content to be more UK specific The website gets all its content from an asp database(dont know why they haev done it like that) so i thought using the mod_write thing or whatever it is to make the site more crawlable They host the site in holland, would hosting it with a uk company make a differnece? Submit to directories that focus on the UK more? Any help will be much appreciated!
Mod rewrite - Is the current site being spidered? if the answer is yes, then do not mod rewrite as there is no need. Kep in mind that when you rewrite the urls all the currently spidered ones will no longer really exist. Hosting with a UK company - Be VERY careful here as most uk companies host outside of the uk. 1&1 for example might well find you hosted in Germany, hosteEurope in the USa, and most cut price hosting companies also use the USA for their hosting. Understand this about hosting though, the PHYSICAL LOCATION is NOT where the server is physically located. The server might be in a telehouse on carary Wharf, but it might be physically located in the USA. The p[hysical location is where the IP address resolves to. As most companies use US IP blocks, this can cause problems. It is not enough to ask your host either, as many of them don't have a clue. Physically check with the tool available on this site (DP) Submit to UK directories - YES this will help greatly,. Use Tompson & kelly search, plus as many UK only sites. Other stuff - Have a physical UK address at the foot of every page, link to UK only directory & information pages. Good Luck.
Hi Peanut, I had a similar problem a few years back when beginning seo on my site. I run a print company and our main keyword phrase is 'business cards'. I just couldn't budge any of the big boys on Google.com so decided to tailor the site for the UK market, which made sense anyway as we only ship to the UK & Europe. I then started targeting the keywords 'business cards uk'. Most sub pages are titled in a similar way, e.g. Letterheads UK, Envelopes UK etc. We now have many no. 1 slots on Google.co.uk & Google.com. As this is my first post here I don't want to infringe any rules on self-advertising but if you type 'business cards uk' in Google you should find us and you can see how I approached the problem. If the diving company you represent is primarily UK based I would suggest a similar strategy. Hope this helps a little and good luck with your campaign. Noz
