Directories have horrible revenues unless it is a niche that ranks well for a keyword in the search engines. I operate a directory (directoryfire) and have promoted it heavily, even buying links for it, yet it only makes only 5-10 dollars a month (the traffic is at aprox. 150 visits a day).

Most of the revenue comes from selling featured links, which I sell once every 1 to 2 months.
Adsense earnings are like 50 cents a month, that bad!

Unless the directory is a niche, part of an existing website or has a specific purpose. I think general directories are a waste of time.

There are so many directories now that I think creating new ones is not worth it. If however it's part of an existing site or catering for a good niche then maybe it would be worth considering. But if you just in it for the money then you are most probably wasting your time.

Again, if you do a lot of marketing and promotion, and your directly actually causes the listed sites to get traffic (which is extremely difficult), I don't think it's a "Business Idea" any more. However, they still exist in probably thousand's of dozens :).

Directories require a lot of money and years of work to develop and brand. You also have to have very good business skills and be proficient at marketing. If you have the time, money and the skills then go for it; just don’t fall into the fool’s world of setting up a cheap script on cheap hosting and advertising on forums, you will just end up the next person at the end of a long line of fools.

Without promotion, your directory is hard to success or making real cash.

    HI

If you have a lot of money... then you can get a good directory up in about 12 months... but if you do not have much money then you need a good .com and a lot of time to promote it each day and re-invest everything you make back in to promoting your directory...

You also need to have a lot of mods.. and approve listings every 24-48 hours...

For me I think 1 directory is enough and focus your time and energy on it...

There is a lot to running a successful directory..

    Thanks
    Tom

    HI

If I was to start a new directory now.. and had no money.. then I would not bother..

But if you have some money to invest in a good domain... and make it at least a .com or .net and make the keyword phrase of the directory contain it in the domain.. then go for it...

Let me say this back in 06 I got LinkDirectory.com for a good price.. I contacted the owner a few times over a 12 month period and made him an offer and after like 6 emails he sold me the domain... and with a lot of work and money my directory is very successful.

It is making more now each month then I paid for the domain..

With so many directories out their a good .com .net domain is the key.... unless you have a lot of money to advertise your new directory.. Because there are so many out there now and each month i go over 600 directories that have died... because I also own and run DirectorySubmitter.com so I see a lot of dead directories each month..

    They come and go...

If you have any questions PM me or post here...

All good directories will be around for a long time... the crap will die... as like anything..

    Tom

I think that they are talking about link directories in specific.

For you seogray, i think that the best way would to get some solid hosting and a good domain name thats is a .com and then purchase a script...I have been told one of the best ones is called PHPlink, they have a demo on their site, go check it out. Hope that helps.

I thing it's good idea. But for first step do not look fast revenue. Just do it with pleasure
You must keep these below step :
    1. review directory listing
    2. go to web authenticity
    3. well categorized
    4. keep traffic
    5. update any bad link and remove
    6. using keyword properly
