Making a blog page on my site for SEO?

    Hey all

First of all, my site is http://www.realfreebies.co.uk

I was just wondering if adding a blog to my website, i.e - http://www.realfreebies.co.uk/blog and then updating that with news about freebies that have come out etc, would that help me in terms of SEO?

    Thanks a lot.

An onsite blog can be a big help for the SEO of your website, if used right.

    Some advantages of blogging:
The possibility to add your RSS feed to directories, ping sites etc.
A constant flow of new pages to your website.
    Can help internal linking.
A blog will allow you to interact with other bloggers which can be a source to quite a few good links.
Blog posts can be submitted to social media sites.

Yes, having a blog helps greatly, even a wordpress with similar style setup in a folder will help a lot.

A blog post with a picture of your freebie and a link to your shop will help you get higher in search engines

Thanks a lot for the replies so far...

So, my main content on my website is about getting free items like XBox 360s, PS3s, Wiis etc...

Should my blog posts be related to these consoles? Or could I just post about free samples and similar freebies (where you just enter your address and receive)? :)

    Thanks.

Should I link to my homepage in every post? Or should I just link to it on the blog home page?

    Schism,

I wouldn't worry too much about sticking to the subject all the time. I would keep a majority of post related to consoles, if that's the main theme of your site, but have a decent amount of off-topic or just freebie-topic posts on top of the console posts.

I wouldn't link the homepage in every post, rather I would vary the linking a lot and link to pages that are relevant for the post subject.

    Of course it'll help!
Blog is crawled more often than static website.
Blog will give you traffic and good position in Google.

    Schism,

I might do this too, same topic as well.....
Will you be using blogging software or just updating a page? I don't know how blogs work..

PS you might recognise my username from another site we are both on.

Do a Google news search with that keyword, and look at the stories that come in. Most of them will be genuine, and you can rewrite the content.

In general, no. Blogs have nothing special over any other Web site save for being a "one to many" communications tool. That being said, you can have a well optimized blog that will have its pages rank well in the search engines, and you can have a poorly optimized blog that will have its pages rank in the gutter - the same holds true of regular Web sites.

Remember, search engines don't index and rank Web sites, they index and rank Web PAGES. They could care less if the page was created with a Fischer Price My First Web Designer authoring program that produces bloated HTML code or was created dynamically with a content management system (and a blog does fall into this category).

Now, I'm going to say this without having seen your site. If you're going to add the blog hoping that it will improve your SEO, don't. Instead, focus on optimizing your own Web site. Check that you have no broken links, you're using your HTML code properly (using heading tags for your headings, <cite>ing your sources, and so forth), targeting the keywords that people actually search for (like "Ronald McDonald Childrens' Charities" instead of "Trust Ronald McDonald" for instance*), and acquiring incoming links from related sites using the keywords you want to rank for.

    * it was an accident - honest! :D

Really there is good advantage of making blog.
daily blog readers will view your blog and you the get the traffic for your site through blog.
simply making blog doesn't matter. you have post fresh content daily in your blog. then only you will get visitors for your site.
