make the overall server load faster? cache?

on my old webhost, it seemed to cache the pages better and as long as the cache was stored in your web browser it wouldn't redownload every single graphic and things like that.

On my new webhost it seems to re download almost all the graphics all the time and it has nothing to do with my browser.

some people told me to add some code to all my files for gzip, but there has to be something else that my old host uses to make it so that it didn't have to redownload all the time.

Anyone know what could do this and what I could use myself? Like something I could add to the php.ini or .htaccess files?

I don't have direct access to the server settings, but im sure everyone on the account has their own php.ini and things like that.

Use MMC cache or Eaccelarator I have tested both MMC works better in some cases but eaccelarator is better for forums.

Double check the time/date that the server is set to.

If your browsers are caching files for (for example) 2 weeks, and your server is set up with a date of last year - then all files will be sent as being set with a cache expiry date of 50 weeks ago.
