Hi, I'm planning to make a server from my Laptop with XAMP and No-IP.com because I have a dynamic IP.
I think I gonna host a proxy on it.
What else can I host? Is it a good idea to do this?

If your looking at hosting anything on your home PC/Laptop this is a bad idea, specially a proxy, your end up receiving either an email from your ISP or having your internet connection cancelled due to breaking their Term's and Conditions.

Also the normal speed of a Home Internet connection is no where near powerful enough for a Proxy and anything viewed by the Proxy's users will come back to you, illegal files e.t.c

And if the access is limited. Say max 10 users for the proxy?
Speed? No problem! I have 14830 kbps down and 965 up.

Some ISPs block commonly used ports by servers (such as port 80) just to prevent people from hosting home servers such the one you wish to make, you should check if this is the case with your ISP.

Also it is indeed a bad idea to host a server on a home internet connection which is designed to have high download and low upload speed, and if your ISP will notice a high and constant demand for upload speed from your IP they'll probably take some actions against you or force a lower upload speed limit on your connection, which would make your home server even more useless.

You should carefully read their terms of service, to which you agreed when signing the Internet contract, before starting this.

    Good luck!

Thanks I will read them for sure. The last thing I want is that my internet is cut off and pay a fine or get lawsuit on my neck :D!
But has it advantages? I searched online, it has a few advantages but because of the low hosting prices it is not really necessary.

with 1 mbit upload, you wont be able to host a regular website, let alone host a proxy that uses a lot of bandwidth. My ISP doesnt have a problem with having 'home servers' so I got an old computer setup with linux and apache, but with 1 mbit upload, it is too slow.

1MPBS upload would be enought to host static page that does not have hosted any videos or big files. I guess it could handle like 50-100 visits per day.

But for hosting file or using it as ftp this is a bit too slow.

Also your get quite high ping's and latency running off a Home Network Connection, You can get such cheap VPS's now there is no reasons to think about hosting your site's at home, unless you already have the infrastructure available at no extra cost.
