Their site will not stay there for more than a few weeks. I am flattered that you think my blog competes with a major multinational company though.

It seems that they are using the DP COOP for some of the links. See the ads at the bottom of this site.

The links on summers site are (I thought obviously...) from DP's coop network.

Apparently someone in the network (or even Shawn himself?) has huge coop weight and got a lot of backlinks that way.

I think they are COOP links on Summers site but there isn't the usual tracking gif being loaded up from the digitalpoint.com domain so I can't say for sure. Some of the other sites DO have the tracking gif so the ads are COOP ads.

This might not seem like a big story to most people but I just find it hard to believe a massive company like this would risk being banned from Google by apparently getting so many links.

You cannot get banned from google for getting too many links. Those links can be discounted and not counted by google, but too many backlinks cannot get a website banned, if there is nothing shady on the site itself.
They could lose their rankings, in the worst case.

I know there are many big coorporate sites that do this. I do not think this is illegal. If you have money, you can go out and buy links who is stopping you from doing such. It is not illegal to buy links on site otherwise why would text-link-ads.com would exists?? If I could, I would do same to get number 1 spot, but unfortunately, I do not have deep pockets

I DO NOT think this is SPAMMING. If you guys think its illegal, I really want to kick my competitors ass because its a corporate with deep pockets and has more 3 million back links from trust ful sites due to its corporate partnership :)

    Yeah, like Microsoft! http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/advsearch?p=http://microsoft.com&bwm=i&bwmo=d&bwmf=s

    38,000,000 links.

EDIT-I didn't mean to insult mad4's logic, I'm just saying wow, that's a lot of links. Personally I think those guys have a limited time before they're gone. However I'm guessing they'll be gone "algorithmically" as opposed to "google takes them out", since they hate intervening manually in what theoretically is a failure of their algorithm.

Assuming all the links have exactly the same anchor text "mobile phones", I'd be very disappointed if it retained its No.1 position for much longer.

That would be a real slap in the face for everyone who puts their trust in what Google's been telling us for a long time - about the importance of natural linking patterns etc

Mad4 they 100% are coop links as far as I know. I see them always on sites I host coop on. They must have a lot of weight because there ad shows so many times. I'm not familar with the UK Mobile market but I did not think they were major until this thread.

They moved to the top of MSN for the term "mobile phones" and still get only about 100 uniques.:D I think google will come down hard on them though because they don't want to be seen to be advocating cheating. They certainly stopped BMW in their tracks not long ago.

Good luck to you. Also, I'm sure that every single webmaster running the COOP on their site is behind you on this as well. :D

Do you really think it is a good idea to out them, some of them by name, and draw Google's attention to them...?

I am not against the COOP at all. The problem is when a huge company misuses the coop to gain top rankings for a very lucrative term and just draws attention to the fact that the coop helps webmasters.

The last thing DP wants is google to turn round and suddenly start banning sites. Maybe Shawn should limit peoples weight or something to stop one site getting 3 million links? Such attention is only going to be bad for the coop in the long term.

Wow, thats a lot of links. Wish I could afford things like that. It is frustrating to see someone be able to spam that many backlinks. Kind of disrupts the natural flow, and makes it harder for people to find what they actually want on Google.

Actually when you buy sitewide footer links you can get a few million links for $1000/month if you know where to shop.

Asside from that. I'm sure if you report it to Google they will do something about it.

Sometimes a large company will just buy a large amount of advertising space all at once. They actually hire media buyers to do that kinds of stuff.

You might only notice the text link advertisements but I'm sure it's not just text links they are buying. Hell I will sell them some ad space if I new it wouldn't get me banned.

I notice they are currently hiring marketing people as well.

Well they can use spam if they want, they are still crap

3 is the worst network in the world may i just add, the support is crap, they lie to you saying they have done something when they havent (blocked your phone) My mom phone was stolen, she phoned up and they said they had blocked the phone, she got charges of £450 (about $900) from premium numbers so she phoned up again and she answered all the questions and was on the phone for about 1 hour... At the end they said "Sorry I am not allowed to block phones... You will need to unsubscribe from them" (Please note this phone was still been used)
