I have heard that a good seo technique is to have many niche sites pointing to your main site. To ringtones as an example (who doesn't love ringtones?) main site: ringtones.com supporting sites: hiphopringtones.com, rapringtones.com, rockringtones.com, etc. does anyone else employ this strategy, and if so, what exactly does "pointing" mean, a redirect, or just a lot of links from niche sites pointing to the main site?
I think a decent strategy is "Be your own competition". In other words, create other sites that are competing against you in a sense, but inter-link them all with normal links, don't redirect. This works because you take up more of the market with multiple sites instead of just one, and because you're generating backlinks and sending visitors to your own sites as well. The only problem with this is that search engines take into account the IP of the websites, so if theyre all the same they obviously will take that into account.
