I was just wondering: which kind of links does Google like best?

a link in the footer or sidebar on every page on a site

    -- or --

just one link on the main page (which has the highest PR, anyway), inside the text of an article

Google prefers links which are within the body of the page, a link within the body of
an article is considered a good link by google.

I think link on every page is a best option if you can do that other wise link in footer or sidebar doesn't make any difference for Google so make choices as
    1: on every page
    2: sidebar
    3: footer
    4: on main page
    Hope it will help you

If Yahoo is following Google, which is very likely then Yahoo has devalued backlinks found in footer( in line with Google.. ), Google will definitely give more merit to an editorial link ( one in, on page text )

Thanks for the post on Yahoo devaluing links found in the footer of a website. Yahoo's move will further irk webmasters. It would make templates for Wordpress and Blogger less beneficial.
