I honestly think that dmoz is over-rated, people here tend to think that a dmoz link is what stands between you and the number 1 rank in your keywords.
Ironically, if those dmoz addicts try to spend half the time they waste trying to get accepted into dmoz by link building they would probably be better off.

DMOZ allows their databases to be replicated for free. Many if not most of the secondary directories seed their sites with DMOZ data. SO if you're listed in DMOZ you'll get end up being listed in thousands of other directories as they're created and as their databases are updated.

Yeah that is true, but the catch is that there is no benefit from that.

No traffic comes from dmoz. If no one is using the real dmoz, why would anyone use the copies? They don't. Check your logs.

And if you think you will benefit from the backlinks you are wrong again.

We get backlinks to rank in Google. Google knows about dmoz and all the directories that use their data - Google does not count the downstream directories as additional backlinks to your site.

many directories pull their results from dmoz, that's the main good thing about having a link with them ;)

Pretty sure? You should look into it further and be 100% sure like I am.

No real traffic comes from dmoz, everybody knows that.

Google does not count the downstream directories as extra links.

You would have to be out of your mind to think that getting one link in dmoz is equal to 1000's of links...

Google looks at a backlink as a vote for your site, a link on one page at dmoz counts as one vote. Google knows that the downstream directories are duplicates of dmoz and not unique sites casting votes.

1998 called they want their SEO back.

Whatever... Google has stated - recently - that they count the links.

Did you even look at the links I provided? It's some pretty interesting shit.

    Done arguing on this.

I think google value "more" a link from dmoz... Usually after you are listed at DMOZ you will immediately notice a slight rise in SERPS. Also some categories do send traffic, maybe not a lot but 3-4 visitors a day and these are highly targetted traffic who stay in the site for a longer time. A link from DMOZ, even if it's the only link will quickly get you to PR2/3.
All these I have noticed as 4 of my sites are listed at DMOZ and I kept track of visitors through analytics

Yeah, its interesting and proves my points. Here are some direct quotes from the links you provided.

    and another one

Google doesn't trust dmoz, its content is not firmly under control, obviously.

Should I go on? Don't answer that ;) unless you want the truth.

If a small site has a good listing in DMOZ, you may find its rankings keep rising without any promotion. I have several sites, they are in top 3 on Google several years after they were added in DMOZ. Without dmoz listing, they must have dropped nowhere.
