mailing list script?

Are there any good mailing list / database scripts? I know there are thousands but looking for something that will take in bad email replies, i.e. email not found, email no good, etc, etc and automatically remove them, even go so far as to remove request automatically.

Something in perl / php / mysql would be great.

Mailman is a popular choice, but it may be complicated to set up and use.
