    Hi Guys

Our site pretavoir.co.uk is performing fine though we think Magento might be a better platform for the future. Do you agree.

I am also interested in hooking up with other eyewear retailers to share ideas etc

i agree that magento is better than osc, but keep in mind that any change in magento will cost lot more than in osc

yes the free version is enough, i use it for several sites, and i really happy with it, i also have osc / CRE loaded sites so i can positively tell you that Magento is better, but more expensive to develop

I had been advised that for future it woudl be better to trnasfer across to magento? but you think might involve too much work. My site is www.pretavaoir.co.uk and has 12.5k products. I find that programming and development throws up a lot of problems and/or conflicts.

I tried out Magento awhile back and guess what? Nothing but problems. It was a real disaster. I had a theme custom designed which ran me hundreds of dollars. Then I later had to discard the entire site due to complications.

Go with Magento IF you're willing to spend $$$ on a fast dedicated server and have a programmer handy just in case if you run into bugs which will be more than often.

The ROI for Magento is not worth it unless you go with their Professional or Enterprise edition which is even more money and a load of BS.

I have few oscommerce and one of magento store running, for oscommerce I just paid a template and get a good look, and the module all is free, and running fast on share hosting,if you just B2C only, that's not bad, in magento I run it on VDS, but still feel slow, the extension not free, you need pay if you want something, spend a lot $$$, if you are a company have budget, you can go magento

I'm an individual ran a store with few products ~100 , and I still found Magento a good choice. Indeed I spend ~40 usd per month for a VPS and spent max 200-300 usd to maintain it. There is plenty of documentation so you can handle the issues yourself if you are on tight budget.
To be honest I never ran a personal ecommerce on OSC and my first real experience was on Magento platform.
So here is one vote for Magento :)

Magento is definitely a better choice as it is more functional, more complicated and requires much more resource spending,
osCommerce is much easier but the ammount of it's functions and useful options is less

In MY opinion Magento BLOWS AWAY OsCommerce hands down. It's a REAL enterprise solution, but most of the people here are right when they say "it isn't easy". It's a very complicated system and the folks at Magento are always releasing it with bugs that screw up your site, but if you're a developer or have access to one (or if you don't need to constantly upgrade) this is definitely the choice for you. It has one of the best front AND back end interfaces I've ever seen and my customers hardly ever have problems checking out.

    My choice is Magento :)
