I switched from OSCommerce to Magento when my host at the time required MySql 5.x on the dedicated servers. OSCommerce required a lot of tweeks that were not part of the core setup.

Since switching to Magento, I've had lots more success and been happy with the performance. I did switch hosts (now using MxHub.com) and, after building the first builds myself, started using the services of NeoNexus Corp. in Wilmington, NC (USA). They have been very professional and delivered quality service. IMHO.

www.prestashop.com and www.opencart.com looks also promising.. anyone tried these yet?

edit: a on the previous page someone already mentioned prestashop. It may lacks features but it is well coded. I might try prestashop for some upcoming project :)

Regretfully, I must take that last statement back as the Magento work did not get finished. After months of frustration trying to get this as was agreed to in writing, we have decided to shut down the site redesign project with NoeNexus Corp. and go a different way. The funny part to this is that NeoNexus Corp. continues to print on the web that they have never lost a web client. This is certainly one they lost!!!

Feature wise Magento is good but it is sometimes slow as compared to osCommerce. And it also needs a dedicated linux server for best results.
Also I would suggest Zencart. You can call zencart a new approach of osCommerce.

    Hello,

OXID, from Germany is a great alternative to Magento. It offers better performance and is feature-rich, including out of the box integration with affiliate programs, market-places and some payment methods. Google for "oxid esales".

If you are looking for services, or help implementing an OXID shop, you can check us out at http://goo.gl/8bfVp

ps: if you want an feature-list for a quick overview, please contact us from http://goo.gl/p5y7G

I prefer Prestashop. magento needs some extra mysql and php modules which makes you run out of safe_mode, and let you have some vulnerabilities. and oscommerce is not giving similar flexibility comparing to others.
