Magento 1.5 or 1.7?

My programmer recommends me to go with magento v1.5 but why would I do that if the latest version is v1.7? Does his request make sense or not?

 

No lol... none whatsoever and 1.8 and 2.0 is likely right around the corner. 1.7 has been out for a really long time.
ver 1.7.0.2 - Added July 5, 2012 I am quite certain that is fine. The only reason I could think someone would suggest such silliness is if they are totally clueless or, trying to start with a template they don't know how to update to work with 1.7.

Note that a ton of quirky things got fixed and features added since then. It's pages and pages of bug fixes and features.

Thanks for the answer - confirmed by many other magento experts so he'd better come with a good case if he wants to convince me otherwise.

 

Version 1.7 is stable and that's the one we use for our clients. I suggest you to go with that one.

 

Another question: I want to integrate ajax based navigation (filter) & scrolling (products). The coder says that in 1.5 this was easy but in 1.7 there are no free extensions that can be used, only paid ones. Can he be correct or not?

 

You can easily find free extensions n 1.5 for magento web development.

Sorta, would have to look into that but specific ajaxy layered nav mods are typically well under 100 dollars as well. Gotta buy a few things from time to time.

those products on the 2nd mod dont scroll with ajax but it does reload the page in that fashion.
