How effective are ads published in national magazines to get people to visit your website?

It all depends on your product.

The only way to know is to find out on your own.

But first get others to critique them. Ask them if they would act on it if they were interested in such a product.

Well in my case its not a product, its a service I'm offering at no charge to the educational community (students/teachers or anyone else interested in learning from my service).

Then you will lose your shirt.

Sorry, but the rates for a magazine will bend you over and rape you. Even the second-class magazines aren't cheap.

Just an idea...but maybe you could contact the educational community itself to ask for ideas, and, sources you can go to to spread the word.

That is, if you haven't already.

Start with the school board, and work your way down. Pitch your sales ball to one school after another.

It's a lot of time on the phone, but if you want your name out there....

Go to your local library and ask for the index of all the schools in the U.S.

Get business cards going. You never know if you happen to meet a teacher, princpal or board member out there somewhere.

Get a fax line in case you get some schools thousands of miles away and they have some sources for you. They can easily fax it to you.

Take out pen and paper and start brainstorming for ideas. Write anything and everything down you can think of. No matter how stupid some of the ideas may seem. This gets your brain working. Later on scratch 'em off, and what will be left will some pretty good ideas that will get you on your way.

Sites students and the educational community hangs out at could be an idea.

Many students go to collegehumor.com. I don't know if that is a good lead for you to put in an ad, though.

    FaceBook?

    Such ads are expensive, though.
