    I'd begin by running AdAware and SpyBot S&D.
    If it's a particularly nasty little blighter (like the Virtumundo currently doing the rounds) you'll need something more specialised to remove.

    Spybot s&d in combination with adaware and AVG will get rid of all your spyware problems for free.

    You can use an online scanner like this one. It is pretty good at finding trojans.
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

    Or install a virus program like AVG or Antivir and then run a scan in safe mode so that the trojans and spyware don't load while scanning.

    More than likely if you've been running a pc for 4-5 years without reformatting you might as well just count on it. It will be good for your PC anyhow. ;)

    Hi,

    Do you have any experience with this one "CoolWebSearch?"
    and...

    ...some of the most common but hardest variants to remove.
    ~~~
    My older computer had it really bad; CWS will reinstall itself every time you remove it. Some of the variants simply will not go away.
    Do you know if the 'triple combo' you suggested will work with CWS too?
    Thanks
    Thanks prinzcy, I tried out the website you provided and it fixed the problem, so its all good.
    I give props to that spyware, I am sure they fool a lot of people to make them think thats its a legit antivirus program.....Didn't fall for it though :)
    4 or 5 years without getting my computers infected...this pc is pretty new, about a year. I dont format unless i really really have to...I am usually pretty careful, just this time I slipped....hopefully the problem is fixed and wont pop up again...if it does ill take your advice and format it
    SpyBot S&D is the best i know. I like to combine it with Spyware Terminator.
    i dunno....i didnt have 1 running until this little problem came up and thats when i scanned my drives. It only found the ones that I got off virusprotectpro. I think if your careful and check the authentication properly than it shouldnt be a problem.
    My sister had that on her laptop. I believe I tried a whole variety of antivirus and antispyware programs, and nothing worked. There was some fix that involved manually editing some things in the registry that did it, finally.
    if you know you just got it and you're running xp:
    go to: start/accessories/system tools/system restore
    you'll have the last 4 or 7 days to restore your pc to.
    Works much better than any cleaner I've ever used.
