Is there any advantages that a mac offers over windows in terms of website design tools, etc.?

I'm talking about design, html editing, etc.

I know mac is known for video editing software and their superiority there but what about other design usuability?

    Thanks in advance.

I don't play games on computers.

I am looking strictly to get something to run design software and some type of editor for html, etc.

Anything related to building websites is what would be used on this machine.

    Get a PC with Vista.period

Dont be taken by the dark side.

If you want to get the best of both worlds as a webmaster I would say get a PC.

Vista just came out yesterday though. All Microsoft products are extremely buggy at first release and OS X has proven to be outstanding so far, with soon to follow Leopard.

    It's a hard choice.

Redmond, start your photocopiers! :D (just a joke, dont take it the wrong way)

I've been using a Mac continuously since November and OS-X for the past year. Sure, you could use a PC to do all of the things a Mac can do.. but.. heres the kicker.. my blood pressure actually dropped significantly when I started using a Mac. Installing in OS-X couldnt be easier. Office for mac sucks but its no worse than the PC version.

I would take a Mac w/ Dreamweaver over PC w/ Front Page any day of the week. With Crossover, most Windows apps run natively without any problems. OR you could run Parallels or Boot Camp... giving you the choice to keep Windows on the side if you want to use it for specific tasks.

Point blank, you cant beat the Intel Core2Duo Macs.

Who wouldn't take Dreamweaver over Front Page? lol Front Page is a joke.

You know, they make Dreamweaver for PC, too. ;)

I've used both Frontpage and Dreamweaver. Frontpage is easier to use but the code it produces is horrible, not saying that Dreamweaver spits out validated code, but it is better.

Would it be smart to wait for OS X Leopard if I ended up deciding on getting a mac?

Where web development is concerned, there is only one reason to get a Mac; Windows. If you work in print publishing, there is no reason not to use a Mac.

For web graphics, Mac and Photoshop is overkill. The web can't take advantage of the graphical performance. Save some bucks, and use the GIMP. It's designed from the ground up for web resolutions.

Use Mac or Linux. The web is Unix, and developing in Windows may cause you to create bad habits. Eschewing Windows will cause your IQ to rise due to no longer having to dumb yourself down to its level. ;)

In a serious vein, you'll have to have a Windows machine for IE, if nothing else. IE's ubiquity and lousy css support won't allow us to ignore it or assume things will just work. You will be more productive working in a *nix environment, i.e., Linux and Mac OS X. Find an el cheapo WinXP loaded machine for IE, and get a nice Mac or Linux box for the real work.

As for waiting for the latest and greatest os version, go ahead and get your Mac. Upgrading is pretty straight forward. On my Debian boxes, I've gone through 4 or 5 major distribution upgrades and 2 kernel upgrades with only a few command line statements and a configuration edit or 3. Only the kernel upgrades required a reboot (for obvious reasons).

Mac upgrades may not be quite as simple, but they're not brain surgery, either.

    cheers,

    gary

SHHHHH... this was my excuse for buying it... "but honey.. Mac has Dreamweaver"

You'll have to decide that for yourself but if you dont need it right away, I would hold off. If not, I would still get the Mac. Vista will be garbage until atleast SP1. Leopard is probably already polished.

Right now I am on a PC, but my next purchase will be a Mac.

I had a Macbook last semester which I purchased to use for my school work. I have owned damn near half a dozen notebooks over the years, that Macbook was one fine piece of hardware.

Also, whoever said productivity goes up on a Mac/*nix machine isn't lying... I have noticed that over the years myself.

With the ability to put a copy of Windows on a mac for your "windows needs" there is no reason not to get a Mac. Their hardware is really top notch and the OSX environment will keep you focused and on track.

    cheers

Mac has a definite and unconquerable advantage over PCs when it comes to designing. ;) I highly agree with kk5st. :D
